Composition
Unity: Continuity is present through a compositional flow that keeps the viewers
eyes moving within the composition, rather than off the picture plane.
Focal Point/Emphasis: The focal point or emphasis in the composition is
thoughtfully placed so that the viewers eye stays in the picture plane (most often
achieved through using the rule of thirds).
Balance: The compositions visual weight is balanced evenly on either side of the
vertical axis. Even an asymmetrical composition should achieve balance on either side
of the vertical axis.
Palette
Value: The painting has an appropriate range of values (darkness and lightness) for
the subject matter.
Hue: The painting has the appropriate hues (colors, or more specifically the base
colors as seen on the color wheel) for the subject matter. Youve made careful
distinctions between warm and cool hues.
Intensity: The colors chosen are of an appropriate intensity (brightness/dullness)
for the subject matter. Youve utilized a good range of intensities within the painting
not too muddy, not overly saturated.
Paint Handling
Edges: The transition between the edge of an object with either the background or
another object is smooth. There should be a believable transition between objectsno
unintentional rough edges or messy smudges. Even in paintings that are impasto or
show dynamic brushwork, special attention needs to be paid to edges of objects!
Transitions: The transitions between colors and values are appropriate: either
blending two colors together gradually, or creating distinct boundaries between colors
as is appropriate for the subject matter.
Form
Proportions: The objects depicted are believable as three dimensional objects. This
requires good perceptual drawing skillsobserving and recording what you see in
front of you, not what you think should be there. If this area needs improvement, you
should spend more time working on your under-drawing, using the sighting method to
measure proportion.

Needs

t: Really
work at this.

Good
attempt:
Build on
this.

Excellent:
Keep this
up!

Chiaroscuro: The shifts in value are an accurate representation of how light is

interacting with the subject matter. If this area needs improvement, your underdrawing may be proportionately accurate, you just need to be more observant of value
shifts as you paint.
Work Ethic
Sketchbooks: Are you keeping up with sketchbook assignments as assigned? For
example, are you recording your color palette choices, making the appropriate amount
of thumbnail sketches, etc.?
Attendance: Did you have perfect attendance during the time allotted for this painting
assignment? If you did not, did you make every effort possible to get caught up,
coming in outside of class if needed?
Effort: Did you spend class time working diligently on the painting assignment? Did
you work outside of class as was necessary? Did you turn in the assignment on time?
