A Critical Discourse Analysis of Muslims Representation in British Newspaper:

The independent and Daily Mail

Abstract

This paper is a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of representation of Muslims in


news coverage in two British newspapers, The Independent and The Daily Mail. The
articles that have been selected in this paper address several topics such as terrorist
attacks by radicals Muslims, Islam phobia, Islamists violence etc. The present paper
employs Van Dijk's analytical framework to explore positive self representation and
negative other representation. Moreover, this paper investigates the use of naming
strategy to represent Muslims negatively. The present paper also sheds light on Macro
and Micro levels of critical discourse analysis. This paper is an attempt to analyze
newspapers from critical discourse analysis.
