but first, one last drug blurb

Warm up:
At the end of the video the speaker mentions that the cases in Illinois didnt know they were taking this
drug. They thought it was heroine. Why and how can this happen? How common do you think this mixup is? Why?

True or False! (Tobacco)

After someone has

started smoking,
enjoyment is the
reason he or she
continues to smoke.

False. The main

reason for continuing
to smoke is addiction
to nicotine.

One of nicotines chief

effects is to elicit the
stress response.

True.

A sign of nicotine
withdrawal is inability
to concentrate

True.

Nicotine is not an
addictive drug.

False. Nicotine is a
highly addictive drug
(as addictive as
heroin).

In emphysema,the
lungs first become
damaged not because
people cant breathe
in but because they
cant breathe out.

True.

Smoking wrinkles the

skin.

True.

To live with a smoker

is to run the risk of
contracting lung
cancer.

True.

One effective way to

reduce the risk of
getting cancer is to
switch from smoking
cigarettes to chewing
tobacco or snuff.

False. The risks of

cancer of the mouth
and throat are greater
for people using
smokeless tobacco
product than for
smokers.

Tobacco and Advertising

Ever since the FDA has begun requiring tobacco
companies to put a large warning label on their
products, they have begun advertising
differently. At first tobacco was seen as a health
product, but when they needed to change their
message, it became one which was geared
towward new smokers. Where better to get new
smokers than healthy young people? (afterall
the older ones wont last long enough to
purchase your product for very long. This
marketing toward children and teens began as
early as the 1950-60s. Here is one example of
such advertisement

But why?
Tobacco companies address young people
directly, because they must attract children and
young teenagers in order to replace the more
than 2 million adult smokers who die each year
worldwide from lung cancer and other smoking
related illnesses. The industry knows that a
person who doesnt become a smoker during
the teen years is most unlikely to take up the
habit later on. Eighty-two percent of adults with
a history of smoking took their first cigarette
before age 18 (Chapter 14 section 1)

answer in journal:
Why do teenagers decide to
start smoking if they know it
is not healthy? How do you
think these teens explain
their choice to smoke (what
is their rationalization for it?)
Answers in book include:

Im young now.I can quit later.

I dont inhale. It cant hurt me
It makes me look grown up
My parents smoke, why shouldnt I?
It distracts me from other things like eating, biting my nails, being
bored, angry or sad.

Review Questions 2-5

Arent e-cigarettes better for you?

Harmless?
Ever had the experience of seeing someone puffing on an e-cigarette in a place where smoking isnt allowed, only to be told,
Chill, its only harmless water vapor.? But in fact, its neither water, nor vapor, nor harmless. Lets get a little nerdy and find out
why.
the vapor thing. If you think back to high school chemistry, you might recall that vapor is the gaseous state of a substance. But ecigs actually emit an aerosol, which is a suspension of particles within a gas. Why does that matter to anyone except chemists?
Because your lungs and small particles are not friends. They can cause irritation and all sorts of respiratory problems.
Next: water. Yeah, theres some H2O. But generally theres also propylene glycol or vegetable glycerine, liquid carriers for the
nicotine. Theyre classified as safe by the FDAif you just plan on eating them. Breathing them is a whole other story. Inhalation
can mess with your airways, even causing an asthma attack in children
And finally, there are usually flavoring agents. Again, fine to eat. But they havent been proven safe to breathe. Some FDAapproved flavors have been shown to damage lung tissue over time. The cinnamon and butter flavorings have been found to be
especially damaging to the lungs when inhaled. In fact, diacetyl, which makes all those buttery flavors, has a nickname for the
disease it causes when you inhale it: popcorn lung. Delicious! .

concerns

e-cig vs cigarettes?E-cig vapor can contain even more particles than tobacco
smoke.
lung inflammation- Vaping causes as much short-term inflammation in your lungs as
regular cigarettes. Nicotine-free vapor may cause even more.
Got asthma? The irritation caused by breathing particles may cause an asthma
attack
sick often? Antibiotic-resistant MRSA bacteria are harder to kill after being exposed
to the particles in e-cig vapor. And another study found that e-cig aerosol decreases
immune system response, and increases susceptibility of flu and pneumonia in
mice.
itchy or irritated? Even short-term exposure to these little buggers can cause
irritation of the throat and eyes, give you a cough, and make you feel dizzy.
bad ticker? Your heart hates these particles, too. They can cause constriction of the
arteries, and that may lead to a heart attack.

But arent they the best way to quit

smoking?
As any former smoker knows, quitting smoking is really, really, really hard. If only there were a magic
decive to make it easy peasy! Lots of people think e-cigs might be the solution, probably in large part
because of how theyre advertised.
Any e-cig brand could go through the clinical trials to become an FDA-approved cessation device, but
so far none of them have announced that they have submitted an application to do so (logically, they
would do this IF the device would work in this manner as bragging rights)
SO, do they work? Jurys still out, but some studies suggest that they hurt quitting efforts. For the best
chance at success, pik an FDA-approved method for quitting

...But wait! theres more!

NICOTINE IS JUST LIKE CAFFEINE.
(IF ITS OPPOSITE DAY.)
Lots of people think of nicotine as fairly harmless, aside from the whole as-addictive-asheroin thing. But it can cause plenty of health problems all on its own.

GRAY MATTER
The human brain reaches maturity at around age 25. Before then, it is especially
vulnerable to nicotine. Long-term effects of adolescent nicotine use may include
changes to the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that handles decision-making

DEATH
Nicotine has also been used as an insecticide, so it shouldnt be a surprise that its
poisonous to humans, too. 60 mg or less can kill an adult.

...And even more!

Ever heard that all you inhale from an e-cigarette is only water vapor, flavorings, and nicotine? Unfortunately, its too
good to be true. Check out the goodies that you could be breathing as well, all found on the California Prop 65 list of
toxic chemicals that can cause cancer or reproductive harm.

formaldehyde- ever dysected an animall in bio? yeah, this is the stuff they keep those animals in! nhaling this
corpse-preserver causes irritation of the eyes, nose and throat. And its also known to cause cancerdouble yay! (Not!)
acetaldehyde- This bad boy can cause irritation of the respiratory tract. At high levels, it can cause fluid to fill your lungs,
wrecking lung tissue.
benzene-no friend to your blood or bone marrow. Long-term exposure has been known to cause leukemia. In women, it
can do a number on the ovaries.
cadmium-Aside from cancer, this heavy metal (not the Metallica kind) can seriously mess with your lungs and kidneys.
isoprene- Suspected to cause cancer by a boatload of public health agencies, this chemical has also been found in
secondhand vapor.
lead-We freak out when we find lead in old paintwhy would we want to inhale it? This toxic chemical affects pretty much
every organ in the human body, and not in a good way.
nickel- Nickels in your pocket are great! (Theyre no quarters, but still.) Breathing this heavy metal, however, can trash your
lungs and cause cancer.

OK, I get it. I wont smoke, but my

friends do (secondhand vapor)

Thirdhand Nicotine- nicotine doesnt just disappear in the air-- it lands. And it sticks. The residue
can be found on walls, countertops-- any surface really. If someone were vaping near you in a
restaurant, that third and nicotine could be in your food, too. Yum!
During secondhand vapor consumption you take in the following:
propylene glycol- also used in anti-freeze, this chemical causes eye, throat and airway
irritation
carcinogens and reproductive toxic chemicals- such as the benzene, formaldehyde,
isoprene, n-nitrosonornicotine, and toluene
particles- remember e-cigs have more than cigarettes
nicotine- even bystanders get a does of nicotine via the vapers aerosol cloud.

Look under your desks

Key facts

Tobacco kills up to half of its users.

Tobacco kills nearly 6 million people each year. More than five million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more
than 600 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Unless urgent action is taken, the annual death toll
could rise to more than eight million by 2030.

If you have a card: you represent a teen smoker

If your card is red: you represent a teen smoker who will die
from a tobacco related illness.
If you have an eaglewing: you represent a non-smoker who
died from tobacco related illness due to secondhand smoke
