Title of Lesson: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

November 11th, 2014


Grade Level: Preschool
Total Time: 35 minutes

Objectives:
The children will develop literacy skills by listening to the book, Chicka Chicka Boom
Boom.
o Domain: Literacy Knowledge and Skills
o Element: Book Appreciation and Knowledge
The children will recognize the first letter of their first name by gluing on the letter to the
tree and talking about the letter.
o Domain: Literacy Knowledge and Skills
o Element: Alphabet Knowledge
The children will gain art skills by using finger paint (on their hand and forearm) to
create a palm tree.
o Domain: Creative Arts Expression
o Element: Art
The children will enhance fine motor skills by gluing on the first letter of their first name
on the tree.
o Domain: Physical Development and Health
o Element: Fine Motor Skills

Materials:
Book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Velcro letters
Green finger paint
Brown finger paint
18 white pieces of construction paper
3 paint brushes
6 paper bowls
Assorted letters (one of each childs first letter of first name)
Each name of the children on sheets of paper

Procedure:
A. Motivation
1. I will show each child their name.
2. I will show the children that there are letters in their name.

I will give each child a velco letter out of the alphabet.

I will show each child their name.

I will tell the children we are going to read the book Chicka Chicka Boom
Boom
5. I will tell the children as they hear their letter to put the letter on the palm tree
(I will help any child that needs help).
6. I will instruct the children to stop their feet as they hear the words BOOM
BOOM.
7. I will read the book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.
8. As I read each page I will wait for the children to place their letter on the tree
(I will help any child that needs help).
9. Any of the remainder letters I will place on the tree.
10. When all the letters have to fall out of the tree, I will have the special helper
pull all the letters off the tree and place them on the ground.
11. I will show each child their name for them to line up and go get their art shirts.
12. The children will be divided into three groups.

Conclusion:
I will have children make their own palm trees. The teacher will paint on the brown finger paint
on the forearm and the green finger paint onto the hand. The children will place their hand on to
the paper. The children will then place a knuckle in the brown pain to make the coconuts. The
children will then place the first letter of their first name on the paper.

Transition:
I will have the children go to the next activity by the first letter of their first name.

Follow-Up Activities/Learning Centers:


1. I will work with the children on writing their first letter of their first name.
2. We will be making portfolios, in which the children have to unscramble the letters of
their names to create their name.
3. We will be doing letter of the week.
