Figure 2 Developing a Hypothesis
Hypothesis A: Maybe it ran out of battery.
Hypothesis B: Maybe it is broken.
Assess Your Understanding
1a. Yes you can have a little tank full of crickets with a log in it and see
how many times they chirp in that tank and see a tank full of crickets
without a log in it and see how many times they chirp in that tank.
b. Maybe if it is raining it will effect how often the crickets chirp.
I got it! Now I know that scientific inquiry is a proposition based on
evidence youve gathered.
Pg. 21
Apply It!
1. The manipulated variable is the salt and sugar. The responding
variable is the amount of salt and sugar (1g).
2. The water and the amount of salt and sugar are another two
variables in this experiment.
3. If 1g of salt and sugar go in separate bottles of water then the
salt will dissolve faster.
Pg. 22
Figure 3 A Controlled Experiment
The amount of crickets for all three cages was 10 crickets (one tank
was 15C, another was 20C and the last one was 25C). Three
variables that have to be the same in this experiment are; the amount
of crickets, the habitat that the cricket are in and the amount of time
the crickets spend in their cage.
Pg. 23
Do the Math!
1. The manipulated variable is the temperature. The responding
variable is the chirps from the crickets per minute.

2. As the temperature increases from 15C to 25C the temperature

gradually increases.
3. I would predict that one cricket would chirp 42 times when the
temperature is 10C.
Pg. 24
Figure 4 Drawing Conclusions
1. Yes because as the temperature increases so does the
number of chirps a cricket makes in a minute.
2. I would do the experiment again to see if I would get the same
results.
3. Yes because I have all the date to prove my hypothesis.
Pg. 25
Figure 5 Communicating Results
Three ways you could share the results is to first compare each
other results, do the experiment again to make sure everybody
did it correctly and to discuss the reasoning of your hypothesis.

Design an Experiment
Question- what does baking soda do when it mixes with vinegar?
Scientific attitudes involved- curiosity and awareness of bias
Hypothesis- when the baking soda and the vinegar mix I think
that the baking soda will start to fizz and bubble.
VariablesManipulated variable- baking soda and vinegar
Responding variable- baking soda and vinegar
Factors to considerCollect data
Number of trials- 3 trials
Units of measure- inches
Scientific skills used- curiosity and awareness of bias.
Next steps- do the experiment again to make sure the results are
correct and share it with other scientists.

2a.They share there results and they also present to each other.
b. They take samples and study it.
