Literary Response Essay- Hamlet

The play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare was written with many themes and
hidden feelings woven into it. The characters express and show emotion in different ways, some
chose to express their feelings by showing others while others chose to hold back on showing
and express by saying. A character in which embodies many feelings throughout the play is
Hamlet himself. He shows of many feelings in different situations. Hamlets character was seen
as mad throughout the play because the way he expressed how he felt about his mothers new
relationship was harsh. Although in that particular scene he showed how he felt often times he
had a hard time expressing his feelings.
Hamlet embodied many feelings throughout the play, but didn't show until the very end
of the play. He is a very smart, and moody man with suicidal tendencies. Within the play he
struggles to cope with his fathers tragic death, he often takes his anger out on other characters.
While he is coping with his fathers death he also has to deal with the fact that his mother
Gertrude is already remarried to a man close to Hamlets father which happens to be his uncle
Claudius. Claudius does not appreciate when Hamlet is sad over his fathers death "Am I a
coward? Who calls me a villain?.." (II.ii) and calls him a wimp.
The climax of the play comes to play when Hamlet speaks out o his mother Gertrudes
new relationship with his uncle. He shows anger within the conversation because he cant believe
that his mother is already remarried and didn't cope his fathers death. He speaks to his mother
intensely saying that she has offended his father by her remarrying that quick. (III.iv) After the

conversation he thinks to himself to how he will get revenge on Claudius for taking both his
mother as his lover and his father as his target for death. Hamlet waits patiently for the death
upon claudius.
Hamlets true self is finally portrayed at the end of the play. He seeks revenge towards his
uncle/ stepdad Claudius and says how he really felt about his mother's new marriage. Also, when
he said to Ophelia that he did love her once. His true feelings come out throughout the play, but
didn't have much of an impact until the end because he finally showed everybody how he felt.
Although it was hard on him to show everybody he finally did it. Although some were hurt like
his mother she finally learned the truth about how he felt about her new life after the death of
King Hamlet.
There are many themes and hidden characteristic woven within the play of Hamlet.
Characters show feelings such as hatred, love, and jealousy. Characters such as Hamlet find it
harder than others to express how they feel because they have so much to deal with on their
plate. He for example lashes out on the people that care about him the most because he can no
longer hold back on his feelings. In the play we see many sides to this character, and how he
develops ways to express his true feelings to the people in his life.
