Placement 4

April 2015

Leamington District Secondary School Dina Riccio

Canadian History and World History
During this placement I taught Canadian History and World History West and
the World. I taught two sections of Canadian History, one at the academic level
and the other at the applied level. I successfully differentiated my instruction to
meet the needs for each class. I also taught university level World History to grade
12s. As this was a very small class only housing thirteen students, I was able to get to
know each student individually and conference with them regarding their learning
goals for the class. I utilized a variety of instructional formats for each of my classes
including: PowerPoint, flip charts, audio-visuals, and group activities. The students
especially responded well to the assignment I created for them titled Twittagram.
This assignment allowed the students to demonstrate their knowledge of the causes
of World War II while incorporating aspects of both Twitter and Instagram.

Placement 3

February 2015

Vincent Massey Secondary School Ken Garlick

Canadian and International Law
During this placement I taught Canadian and International Law for grades
11 and 12. The classes ranged from College, to Mixed, to University level. This was my
first time teaching a university bound class so it was quite different from my previous
experiences. I was able to integrate a variety of instructional formats that are seen
in university classes in order to prepare students for their postsecondary education.
Some of the instructional formats I incorporated were: PowerPoint presentations,
lectures, textbook work, videos, and individual and group focused activities.

Placement 2

December 2014

Leamington District Secondary School Orlena Rossi

World Religions, Working With Children and Food and Nutrition
During this placement I taught World Religions within the Social Sciences
curriculum and covered the chapter on Hinduism. All three of these classes were
either Mixed or Open level. This teaching experience allowed me to observe the
diversity of Mixed and Open level classes and challenged me to meet the needs of
each individual student. Some of the highlights of this practicum were organizing
and doing a yoga session with the World Religions class, engaging with the students
in the STEPS program, knitting hats for babies as part of a fundraiser with the Working
with Children class, and cooking healthy meals with the Food and Nutrition class. In
addition to teaching, I was able to assist with the Senior Girls Volleyball team. I found
coaching to be a great way to get to know the students better and meet students
that were not taking the classes I was teaching.

Placement 1

October 2014

Leamington District Secondary School Dina Riccio

Canadian History
During this placement I planned and presented lessons on Prohibition
and the Great Depression for all three classes in a way that would engage
students with diverse needs while creating an atmosphere of inclusivity. I also
assisted my associate in chaperoning a field trip to the Windsor Airfield as part of
the World War I unit. This educational field trip allowed students to examine WWI
and WWII artefacts and planes, converse with veterans, and learn about the
opportunities offered by a career in the air force today.
