Lesson 10: Journal entries

Inquiry Stage: Making Connections

Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will have an opportunity to demonstrate
their ability to:
1. identify different points of view and respond appropriately from two different
perspectives
Australian Curriculum:
The journey(s) of AT LEAST ONE world navigator, explorer or trader up to the late eighteenth
century, including their contacts with other societies and any impacts. (ACHHK078)
Use historical terms (ACHHS082)
Identify different points of view (ACHHS085)
Develop texts, particularly narratives (ACHHS086)
Plan, draft and publish imaginative, informative and persuasive texts containing key
information and supporting details for a widening range of audiences, demonstrating
increasing control over text structures and language features (ACELY1694)
Resources:

Pencils
Loose lined writing paper

Students Prior Knowledge:

Ability to write narratives

Knowledge of Captain Cook and impacts his discovery of Australia had on the
Indigenous people

Lesson Procedure:
Orientation:

Ask the class about what perspectives we have been learning about in our history
unit
o Specifically Captain Cook and the Indigenous Australians
Ask the class to close their eyes and think about what those two groups might have
been thinking when Captain Cook landed on Australia.
Explain to the class that they will write two different journal entries of the day
Captain Cook landed on Australia from the captains perspective and an Indigenous
perspective.

Enhancing:

Students will be given 15 minutes to brainstorm ideas on paper about their two
different personas. Encourage students to think about the characters thoughts,

feelings, clothing and historically accurate foods etc.

After this time, ask the students to begin writing their journal entries, using their
brainstorming ideas to fuel their writing.
During this time students may approach their teacher for assistance
This task will take more than one lesson, so allow the students as much time as
possible during this lesson.

Concluding:

Once the lesson is five minutes from finishing, ask the students to hand their paper
to the teacher so nothing is lost.

Differentiation for diverse learners:

Students who are unable to write or type could dictate their journal entry to the teacher
who will act as a scribe.
Assessment of Student Learning:
Of: Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of Captain Cook and
the impacts his journey to Australia had on the Indigenous people. Students will identify
different points of view of the same event and use reasoning to see how two different
perspectives could greatly differ on their view of one event. Through this assessment, the
teacher could also assess the students increasing ability over text structure and language
features.
Evaluation- Objectives:

Were the students able to form ideas to shape their journals using information
learnt throughout this unit?
Could students identify the differences between different perspectives and how
they could create two very different accounts?

Evaluation-Self as a Teacher:

Was the task explained clearly?

How could the task be improved?
