Unit Title: Incredible Waves

Name: Daveylyn Berkenkotter

Content Area: Physics

Grade Level: 11th and 12th

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

HS-PS4-1.
Use mathematical representations to support a claim regarding relationships among the frequency, wavelength, and speed of waves
traveling in various media. [Clarification Statement: Examples of data could include electromagnetic radiation traveling in a vacuum and glass, sound
waves traveling through air and water, and seismic waves traveling through the Earth.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is limited to algebraic
relationships and describing those relationships qualitatively.]
HS-PS4-5.
Communicate technical information about how some technological devices use the principles of wave behavior and wave interactions with
matter to transmit and capture information and energy.* [Clarification Statement: Examples could include solar cells capturing light and converting it to
electricity; medical imaging; and communications technology.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessments are limited to qualitative information. Assessments
do not include band theory.]
Big Ideas:

How do waves affect your daily life?

How do waves carry energy?

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will identify wave terminology and/or characteristics while participating in a brainstorming activity.
Students will indicate wave terminology on a guided notes graphic organizer while listening to the teacher lecture and watching a short film.
Students will explain how waves carry energy after they have completed internet research with a group and explain how different waves
propagate on a graphic organizer.
Students will analyze the impact of waves on their daily lives while working with a partner and expressing their ideas on a poster.
Students will be introduced to mathematical interdependency of wavelength, frequency, and speed when the teacher demonstrates multiple
examples and students will apply information to additional problems.
Unit Summary:
This unit is an introduction to the physics of waves. Basic wave terminology and the difference in wave motion will be investigated.
Students will examine internet information regarding waves and how different types of waves affect our lives. They will also be
introduced to the mathematical interdependency of wavelength, frequency, and speed. This introduction will include a wide variety of
wave information, including sound, light, and physical waves.

Lesson 1
Student Learning Objective:

Acceptable Evidence:

Students will identify and

describe 10 wave terms and /or
characteristics independently
while completing guided lecture
notes and a vocabulary quiz.

1.

2.

Students will turn in guided

notes (graphic organizer) they
completed based on the lecture
and film.
Students take a quiz based on
unit vocabulary to ensure
understanding of basic terms.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
1. Students will participate in a brainstorming activity to name
different kinds of waves that affect them.
2. Students listen to teacher lecture on how waves are initiated and
travel.
3. Students fill out a worksheet while listening to teacher lecture and
watching a short video on standing waves.
4. Students engage in classroom discussion regarding wave terms
from this lesson and other terms they may have used outside of
class.
5. Students take a vocabulary quiz.

Lesson 2
Student Learning Objective:

Acceptable Evidence:

Students will analyze the impact

of at least 5 waves on their daily
lives by describing data collected
while completing a Webercise
activity.

1.
2.

Students complete webercise.

Students analyze how waves
impact their lives and write 3-4
paragraphs describing how
waves help them every day.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
1.
2.

Groups of four students per computer will collect data via a

Webercise.
Using data collected during the webercise, students will compose
3-4 paragraphs describing how at least 5 waves help or impact
their daily lives.

Lesson 3
Student Learning Objective:

Acceptable Evidence:

Students will explain how waves

carry energy and evaluate how 2
different waves propagate
through their mediums when
completing a graphic organizer
and will collaborate on a poster
explaining 4 real world wave
examples.
Students will be introduced to
mathematical interdependency of
wavelength, frequency and will
apply information to 5 problems.

1.
2.

3.

Students fill out a graphic

organizer about wave
propagation.
Students create a poster that
describes different types of
waves and how they propagate
through media.
Students perform frequency,
wavelength, and speed
calculations from problems
posted on the board.

Instructional
Strategies:

Lesson Activities:
1.

Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

2.
3.
4.
5.

Students get in teams and look up specific internet sites to access

information on waves.
Students fill in a graphic organizer on wave propagation from the
websites they accessed.
Students are paired (per teacher) to collaborate and design a
poster on wave types, how they move through mediums, and
discuss at least 4 real world examples. (per rubric)
Two pairs of students will get together to critique each others
poster using the rubric and assess recommendations for
improvement.
Students will perform calculations (frequency, wavelength, and
speed) using problems posted on the board.
