Description

Assessme
nt FOR
Learning

The pre-assessment survey will be an informal

gathering of students knowledge and comfort with
all of the outcomes of the course. This will allow me
to pay more attention to areas of need and spend less
time on areas where students already possess the
necessary skills.

Students will:
1. answer an online survey given on various topics
related to the course.
2. send results to the teacher via email.
This assignment will introduce students to the topics
of media impact, including the formats of media and
the roles of media. Students will be given
instructions to view various forms of media with
respect to the different roles of media. We will have
a class discussion, then students will have to
complete this assignment by submitting typed up
answers to me online. This will give me concrete
evidence of student learning, and assist me in
teaching the rest of the course.

Students will:
1. describe the roles and forms of media.
2. compare and contrast various media messages.
3. describe an effective commercially produced
media message.
3. analyze various media messages.
4. describe a media message from a personal,
community or national perspective.
This performance assessment will be the largest part
of students marks. This requires students to produce
a message to be delivered in a format of their choice
and on a topic of their choice. Students will be
expected to demonstrate and apply consistent and
appropriate workstation routines, especially in health
and safety and secure hardware and software use.
Students must also demonstrate basic competencies
in fundamental skills, personal management skills
and teamwork skills. This will be assessed using both
a rubric (included) and a checklist. Students will
evaluate themselves and peers using a checklist. The

teacher will go through the rubric with the student,

who will then write a 250-word reflection. In the
reflection the student will state what went well, what
was challenging, and what they would do differently.
The mark for this assignment will be as follows:
Rubric 65%
Checklists 20% (10% each)
Reflection 15%
Students will:
1. develop a plan for producing a message.
2. use appropriate planning procedures.
3. identify and practice proper use of copyright
restrictions and permissions.
4. create a simple message through a form of media.
5. present to peers.
6. critique peer work.
7. describe their own work and reflect on the
process.
8. upload to an online portfolio.
9. demonstrate appropriate work station routines
with respect to health, safety, and security.
10. demonstrate fundamental skills such as:
communication, information management, use of
numbers, and problem solving.
11. demonstrate personal management skills such as:
positive attitude and behaviours, responsible,
adaptable, continuous learning, and working safely.
This test will cover outcomes that are difficult to
assess by performance assessments. It will be a
summative test to show what students know at a
certain point in time. This test is shown in the Test
Blueprint Assignment
This assignment will have students identify various
career paths that are available to them through the
CTS curriculum (COM specifically). They will
choose one career in which they are interested, then
analyze the environment.
Students will:
1. identify possible life roles or careers that relate to
the skills of Media, Design and Communications.
2. choose a career that meets their interests.
3. analyze the opportunities and barriers of this
career.
4. identify resources to maximize opportunities and
minimize the barriers.
