I. Objectives:
The children will explore the pets and doctor kit to experience what it is like
to be a Veterinarian in pretend play.

engaging in a storytelling experience based on the book, The Itsy Bitsy Spider
by Iza Trapani.

classmates to take care of the pets and making them feel better.

II. Materials:
10 puppets representing pets
Doctor/Vet Kit
Premade File folder Where is my home? game
The Book- The Itsy Bitsy Spider By Iza Trapani

III. Procedure:
A. Motivation
1. I will bring in different pet puppets.
2. I will ask the children to identify the different pet puppets.
3. I will ask the children what sound each of the pets make.
B. Steps
1. I will bring in different pet puppets.
2. I will ask the children to identify the different pet puppets.

3. I will ask the children what sound each of the pets make.
4. I will tell the children today we are going to read the story, The Itsy
Bitsy Spider by Iza Trapani.
5. During the story, I will continue to ask the children questions to keep
them engaged.
6. After the story I will get out the pets and doctor kit.
7. I will allow each child to have their own pet.
8. We will explore the doctor kit together, seeing what each item is for.
9. I will ask the children if they have ever seen this item before.
10. I will allow children to explore the items on their selves.
11. I will discuss with the children how each item helps heal you when you
are hurt.
12. I will talk to each child about what they are using the items for, are they
fixing the pets hurt areas.
13. I will continue going around to all the children asking them how their
pet is doing and if it feels better.
14. I will allow children to switch pets if they would like.
15. We will continue this until all the children seem like they are done with
pretend play, or its time to move on to something else.
16. After I will have the children help me place all the items back in the
doctor kit.
17. I will have children help place all the pets back into my bag.
18. After everything is away, I will get out the file folder game, Where is my
home.
19. I will have one child come over at a time.
20. I will ask the child if they can name all the pets I have in front of us.
21. I will ask the child if they can name all the homes we have in front of
us.
22. I will ask the child if they can match the dog to the dogs home.
23. I will ask the child if they can match the cat to the cats home.
24. I will ask the child if they can match the fish to the fishs home.
25. I will ask the child if they can match the spider to the spiders home.
26. I will ask the child if they can match the frog to the frogs home.
27. I will ask the child if they can match the bird to the birds home.
28. When they are done, I will have them take all the pieces off.
29. I will send the child back to free play and have another child come
over.
30. I will continue steps 19 through 29 until all the children have gone.
31. After that I will pick up my file folder, and continue on with free play or
morning circle.
IV. Conclusion:
File folder game, one on one with a child.
Children will have to match the picture of the pet to what their home would
look like.
The pet and their homes will be:
o Dog- Dog House
o Cat- Cat Bed
o Bird- Bird House
o Fish- Fish Tank
o Frog- Pond/Lily pad
o Spider- Spider Web

V. Transition:
Having Children walk or crawl like their favorite animal to a learning center
to have free play.
VI. Follow-Up Activities/Learning Centers:
1. Pet Day Care- having children have stuffed animals that go through the school
day just like they do.
2. Carrying Our pets- Making pet carries together as a class to get the pets in
the classroom around.
3. Pet Store- Running a pet store with the children, how much for that doggie in
the window.

1. Did the children explore and use the pets and doctor kit to be a
pretend Veterinarian?
2. Did the children engage in the story to enhance their language and
literacy knowledge?
3. Were the children able to recognize where the animals pretend bruises
were, and their body parts?
4. Did the children communicate with each other to work together as
Veterinarians?
5. Did the children use their imagination to be pretend Veterinarians and
take care of the pets with the doctor kit?
