What can I do with Construction Management major?

After switching into the construction management major this spring I

was really interested in what I could do with that degree if I was to
graduate through the program. After doing some research I came up
with that construction management is the middle ground between
architecture, civil engineering, and cost estimating. Although I wanted
to become an architect for very long but unable to get into that degree
field here at UNCC I decided to switch to the construction management
program. This job brings all the jobs that are required to construct a
building together, they are there to make the construction run
smoothly. Still being able to work with architects and give my opinion
in the design aspect of the building is important to me, but with the
construction management degree I will be more hands on and in the
field versus behind a desk drawing all day. This major interest me and I
hope to do more research throughout this writing class to get me ready
for what is ahead.
I started my research with finding a job description of what a
construction management is. I found that the construction manager is
on site and is responsible for making sure that the materials and
logistics of the actual building process. They ensure that the buildings
are to code, built on time, and most of important built to the right
specifications. Construction managers are also known as general
contractors, they have an essential part in the building process with
controlling the on site work but still working with the architects and
engineers to make sure the building is build correct.
I also was able to find some key job skills that are needed by a
construction manager.

Analytical Skills: Construction managers must be good at planning

for large-scale, multi-step projects.

Decision Making: Construction managers must make lots of

decisions, such as picking subcontractors, materials, paints, and
more.

Management Skills: As the boss on site, construction managers

must lead their teams, and keep them motivated and focused on
the job.

Communication: Good writing and speaking skills are needed by

construction managers when communicating with employees,

writing proposals, subcontractors, procuring materials and dealing
with clients.

Technical Skills: Construction managers must know construction

methodologies, read blueprints and understand other technical
aspects of construction.

Time-Management: Deadlines are crucial in construction. Making

sure that everything is on time and moving smoothly is a critical
part of the job.

Knowing some of the job skills can help me prepare for this job in the
future. Having and understanding how to develop upon these job skills
is important to be successful in this job field.
I also looked more at education but did not get real into too much this
time. What I did find was that an entry-level education required was a
Bachelors Degree. A bachelors degree typically takes about 4 years
so I hope I will be able to accomplish this on time. As I look further into
education I will also consider staying in school longer to get a higher
degree.
