sitting or standing still.

Experiences: Describe authentic (real life, hands-on not representational) materials and enticing/ creative experiences in
which children are actively engaged. Safety should be addressed if warranted.

Children will be seated on the floor in a whole group activity. The instructor will be in front of the children
in a low chair. This is so the instructor is slightly higher than the children but also the children must be able
to see the book pages clearly.
The instructor will begin to read the Rainbow Fish book starting with the title and cover clues. Before
reading the book the children will be asked to name what they think the book will be about.
Next the instructor will read the book, asking questions throughout. Children will answer questions by
raising their hands and then answering when called upon by the instructor.
Questions asked will be
Why does rainbow fish get more attention than the other fish?
What does wise mean?
Why do you think the octopus is wise?
What makes you feel special about yourself?
If you were rainbow fish would you give your scales away?
Why was rainbow fish so happy when he gave his scales away?
After the questions have been asked throughout the story and the book is read fully the children can ask
questions that they would like. After their questions they will move to the fish movement lesson stated
next.
Evidence of student learning:
Students who cannot listen to the story will be asked to sit closest to the teacher for closer monitoring.
Students answers will be recorded while the book is being read with a recorder or video. The instructor
should then take note of which child answered and how they answered.
