Lesson Sketch for EDT 313

Individual completing this lesson plan: Jordan Blosser and Katie Odell
Lesson title: Hook-What do we know about plants?

Date that lesson was taught:

Standards in 2 Domains:
1. General Knowledge and Cognition: Stand: Life Science Topic: Explorations of living thingsWith
modeling and support, demonstrate an understanding that living things change over time (e.g., life
cycle).
2. Language and Literacy Development: Strand: Listening and Speaking Topic: Expressive Language
Use language to communicate in a variety of ways with others to share observations, ideas and
experiences; problem-solve, reason, predict and seek new information.
Instructional objectives: list 2observable/measurable objectives for this lesson. Use precise language w/ action verbs.
The student will be able to:
1. provide an example of what plants need to grow, where plants come from, or an observation of
plants that the student learned in the book
2.

answer questions and seem engaged while listening to the book

Experiences: Describe authentic (real life, hands-on not representational) materials and enticing/ creative experiences in
which children are actively engaged. Safety should be addressed if warranted.

We will read the book How a Seed Grows by Helene J Jordan and ask questions about the pictures and
story in the book while reading. We omitted some pages and words in order to make the story more basic
and so that the children could better understand. After asking the students to sit quietly, turn on their
listening ears, and put on their thinking caps, we will begin by asking the students if they know what a seed
is or where plants come from and use scaffolding questions so they can use their schema to remember
anything they know about seeds and plants. During the story we will ask the students to predict what will
happen to the seed in the book, we will ask questions such as What do plants need to grow?, Do all the
seeds on this page seem the same?, Do all plants come from the same seed?, or What do you notice
about the seed once it is planted?. We will have a check list where we will see which students are sitting
quietly and engaged, which students answered the questions, and which students asked questions about the
book. We will write down the student answers and discussion. After listening to what children know and
what they are interested in, we will use this information to plan the next lessons.

Evidence of student learning:

Checklist of each students name and whether or not they were participating and pictures will be the
evidence of this lesson.
