Reading Response #4
The Lexile Framework is a tool that allows teachers to match a student with a text based
on a number. The framework has levelled over one hundred million books, websites, and articles
in order to give students a level of best fit for comprehension. The Lexile website states that a
childs Lexile range is like a reading safety zone.
A classroom teacher might use the Lexile Framework to level the reading they are
asking the students to complete. For example, if I wanted to assign an article from Times
Magazine, I might want to run it through the Lexile Analyzer to make sure it isnt too far above
the level that my students are supposed to be at in their grade. This might also allow me to make
sure that I scaffold my students learning before they read. I have seen many classrooms that
level their students by Lexile numbers, only allowing them to read inside their zone. I would not
use this method, however. Students should be given freedom to choose a book they are
interested, no matter if it is above or below their Lexile number.
Using the I dont know my Lexile Number interface, I determined that the students in
my group were in the 630L 910L range. The passage I chose was from an article that my
students read. The article was given as a way to keep information from a news video fresh in
their minds. My students followed along with the text as well as watching the video.
