Topic: color, season,preferences,and pronouns



Overview of lesson

The first part of the lesson will be a review of the vocabulary learned the day
before. The vocabulary will include color words and the names of the
seasons. The students will review with a flashcard quiz. After the quiz, do a
quick introduction of pronouns and their role in sentences. The students will
use the vocabulary that they have learned and the new grammar lesson to
practice forming sentences. The next part of the lesson will be an activity that
will allow the students to get in a group ask each other questions from the
provided question sheet to generate English conversation.To end the class,
have each students write a 5 sentence paragraph in an email to their
electronic pen pal using skills that they learned in this lesson.

Objectives

Given the pronoun information, students will be able to form


sentences using pronouns without grammatical error
Given the color and season discussion questions, students will be
able to form sentences with the color and season vocabulary words
without error.
Given the color and season discussion questions, students will be
able to generate conversation in English with peers without
grammatical errors
Given the electronic pen pal assignment, students will be able to type
an English paragraph to a peer without any grammatical errors.
Given the electronic pen pal assignments, students will use the

internet and Email to communicate with peers without any


grammatical errors
Given the educational videos, students will learn the
colors(red,orange,yellow,green,blue,purple,pink,black,brown,white)
and the seasons(winter,spring,summer,fall).
Standards

Group questions use the California Standards of expanding and


enriching ideas, connecting ideas, exchanging information, listening
actively, presenting, and justifying.

Electronic pen pal uses the California Standards of structuring
cohesive text,connecting ideas, exchanging information, interacting
via written(typed) English, adapting language choices,
reading/viewing closely, writing, justifying, understanding cohesion,

Procedures

1. Show the students the Color song for children video. After the color
video, show the students Learn all about the four seasons video.
2. Stand in front of the class and show the students an ipad with a
picture of either red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, black,
white, brown, fall, winter, summer, or spring on them. Have the
students write on a piece of paper what they think the picture is.
Collect the papers once all of the images have been shown. Check
the students answers. Reward the student that had the highest score
with a piece of candy.
3. Introduce pronouns to the student by presenting the pronoun
powerpoint.
4. Introduce likes and dislikes to the students. Teach them the
meaning of the words, the placement in the sentence, and when it is
appropriate to use them.
5. To use the vocabulary that they have learned and the grammar that
they have learned, have each student write sentences about what
season they like, what color their mom likes, what color their dad
likes, and what season their family likes. Have them use only
pronouns, color/season vocab, and the use of likes and dislikes to
give them practice forming effective sentences using skills that they
have learned. Collect the sentences when the students are done.
6. Pair the students into groups of two. Pass out the Color/Season

question sheet to each pair of students. Have the students alternate


asking each other the questions. Require the students to answer the
questions in sentence form. Tell them to make up two questions for
their partner that are not already on the question. This activity will
help the students generate conversations in English. For extra points,
the teacher will ask for volunteers to present their conversation in
front of the class.
7. To end the lesson, introduce Electronic Pen Pals. Have each
student exchange emails with the partner that they were assigned to
for the question activity. For homework, the students will type an
email to their partner. The email will be a 5 sentence paragraph using
any vocab/ grammar that they have learned throughout the class. If
students do not have access to a computer at home, allow them to go
to the library to use the computer at the beginning of the next class.
8. Have the students finish a worksheet of the following questions:
vocabulary and images matching part I:
(red, orange, yellow, green, blue, black)
vocabulary and images matching part II:
(spring, summer, fall, winter)
interview questions about favorite colors
Ask and write down 5 friends answer to this question:
what are your favourite colors?
. interview question about favorite seasons:
Ask and write 2 friends answer to this question:
what are your favourite seasons?
Assessment

The Color and Season Discussion worksheet will be graded on


spelling and consistency in sentence structure.
On the matching portion of the Homework of the Day worksheet will
be graded based on whether the answer is correct. On the writing
portion of the homework, it will be graded on correct use of grammar
and consistency in sentence structure.
Overall, students will be assessed on how well they are able to write
and speak English by retention of information.
