5E Lesson Plan

Topic: Rates and Ratios

TEKS:
111.22. Mathematics, Grade 6 (B) (3) Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking. The
student solves problems involving direct proportional relationships. The student is expected to:
(A) use ratios to describe proportional situations;
(B) represent ratios and percents with concrete models, fractions, and decimals; and
(C) use ratios to make predictions in proportional situations.
Lesson Plan
ENGAGE
The teacher will show the slides on the Rates and Ratios engage PowerPoint and ask the students
to write down either yes or no if the situation shown is a rate.
The student will read the situations shown on the Rates and Ratios engage PowerPoint and write
down either yes or no if the situation shown is a rate.
EXPLORE
The teacher will have the students get in pairs and show the Rates and Ratios engage PowerPoint
again. The teacher will ask the students to write down what is being compared in each situation,
and then discuss with their partner whether each situation is a rate.
The student will get in pairs and watch the Rates and Ratios engage PowerPoint again. The
students will write down what is being compared in each situation, and then discuss with their
partner whether each situation is a rate.
EXPLAIN
The teacher will show the Rates and Ratios engage PowerPoint again and ask the students for
what is being compared in each situation. The teacher will guide the students towards the
realization that a rate compares different types of measurement. The teacher will guide the
students through filling in Rates and Ratios Flowchart Explain. The teacher will then have the
students complete Rates and Ratios Table Explain with or without guidance, depending on
whether the teacher feels the students need more instruction.
The student will participate in the discussion about the Rates and Ratios engage PowerPoint and
come to the realization that a rate compares different types of measurement. The students will
follow the teacher through filling in Rates and Ratios Flowchart Explain. The students will
complete Rates and Ratios Table Explain with or without guidance.
ELABORATE
The teacher will have the students complete Rates and Ratios Elaborate with or without a
partner. The teacher will move about the room assisting any students who need it.

The student will complete Rates and Ratios Elaborate with or without a partner.
EVALUATE
The teacher will have the students create their own ratio, draw the corresponding model, write a
verbal description for their ratio, and fill in a table and graph that represents their ratio.
The student will create their own ratio, draw the corresponding model, write a verbal description
for their ratio, and fill in a table and graph that represents their ratio.
