IDENTIFYING TARGET
AUDIENCE
PRODUCTIONS SIMILAR TO MY
IDEA
From the first focus group that I conducted the main productions
that I could look at to help me with my production are Wallace and
Gromit and The Lego Movie. All of the Wallace and Gromit
productions are stop motion animations and are aimed at families
and children. The Lego Movie is a computer generated animation
and features Lego people, as well as being aimed at children and
families. These productions are good to look at for inspiration
because they have the same target audience as me, as well as
having similar themes in the way that they are made or the style in
which they are created.
AGE
The age of the target audience that I would like to appeal to is children between the ages of 5 and
12. as well as appealing to their parents to make it a more family orientated film like the Lego
Movie and Wallace and Gromit. The Lego Movie has a BBFC rating of Universal, so it is appealing
to children of all ages, whereas Wallace and Gromit A Matter of Loaf and Death has a Parental
Guidance rating which is the same rating as I am going to have in my production, which means
that it is suitable for most children, but the parents should watch it first and decide for themselves
whether it is appropriate for their young children. The reason that I have chosen this age group is
because the narrative of my trailer has quite a lot of brutal content because there are a lot of
murders within the town. However I plan on making these scenes obvious about what has
happened, but not actually show any of the characters being killed. This way it can appeal to the
younger audience of the 5 year olds, but still be just grown up enough to appeal to the 12 year
olds too. The use of Lego characters in my animation makes the production have more of an
innocent feel, so it is going to be quite a simple process to make my production appeal to my
target age. The toy Lego that I will be using in my production will be the better construction Lego
which has a minimum age of 4 years old because it contains small parts. Since 4 year olds are in
my target audience it may encourage them to get their own Lego and create their own worlds. So
the materials that I am using in my production are appropriate for the age of my target audience.
GENDER
The gender that I am aiming my production at is both females and
males. Lego is predominantly a male toy but the narrative of the film
can appeal to both genders, especially since it is aimed to be watched in
a family environment. I will also include male and female characters in
my production in order for there to be relatable characters to both
genders. This is similar to the Lego movie because there is a main male
character, but there is also a strong female co-star who helps the main
character all the way through the film. So there is a strong role model
for both genders who watch the production. As there isnt going to be a
specific main character in my production, I will just include a relatively
even split in the characters that I have in my trailer.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC GROUPING
I think that my production can appeal to all socio-economic
groups from E-A because it is a family film that can be
watched by anyone, and people from all of these groups are
likely to have children. So it is an all round film with no
prejudices towards any social group. This is the same with
both the Lego Movie and all of the Wallace and Gromit
productions.
LIFESTYLE
The lifestyle that I am appealing to with my target audience is
families. A standard family lifestyle where everyone sits down
together to watch a film that is suitable for everyone. So families
with young children that are in primary school is the best
representation of who my film is going to be aimed at. It can be
for single parents as well as married families, since the main
target audience is children. So as long as it is a family
environment and a family lifestyle, then my production can
appeal to them. The film itself has a completely different
lifestyle to this since there are no children in it. But the Lego
movie and the Wallace and Gromit films dont show any signs of
there being a strong family environment, so I can follow this
theme while still appealing to my target audience.
LOCATION
The location of my target audience is the United Kingdom and the United States of
America because I think that these are the best places to release my film because I
am most likely to make it a big hit. This is because my production is an English
speaking production, so it has to be shown in countries that can understand it, as
well as being a narrative that people from both these large areas are likely to enjoy.
Since there are families all over the world it doesnt matter if the people in these
areas live in the countryside or the cities because they will be able to have access to
it wherever they go because technology is very wide spread in this generation. It is
also best to appeal to a western market because we have accessibility more luxury
toys like Lego, whereas a middle eastern market is a lot less likely to because there
is a lot more poverty in their area of the world. So many of them will not have access
to Lego as it is quite an expensive toy, 650 assorted bricks costing 45.36 on
Amazon. So this expensive product is a lot more likely to be known in the western
area of the world, so it is the best place to show my production as it is more wealthy.

The Lego Movie is a child-friendly, family film which is about how one construction worker who
about him at all becomes special because he believes in himself. The style of animation used for the production is
computer generated animation, so It is very different to my stop motion technique. The film is set in a city but has
different worlds that they travel to throughout the film, and there is a bad character called Professor Business who
wants the world that he owns to go just the way he wants it to by making them follow instructions and eventually
going mad and sticking everything down with superglue. It has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 8.1 out of 10 and a 96%
success rating, as well as it bringing in 8,051,140 in the opening weekend in the UK.
Wallace and Gromit A Matter of Loaf and Death is about a psychotic woman who used to be
the star of a baking companys adverts but ate too much bread and became to fat to keep
doing it, so she takes her revenge out on bakers by seducing them and then killing them. She
has murdered 12 bakers before she seduces the main character, Wallace, and it is Gromit
who stops her from killing him. The production is a stop motion animation made from
modelling clay and armatures, with its sets made specifically for the production, so there is
little to no green screening used. The production drew in over 14 million people when it was
aired for the first time, which made it the most viewed show on TV, this makes it a very
