2 Digestive System
Period 3 Table 6

Mouth
The mouth is the first step on
the digestive system it
contains teeth that helps
chew and break down the
food to make it easier to
digest. The mouth also
contains saliva that also help
break down even more.

Pharynx
The pharynx also known as the
throat is the entrance to the
esophagus. The job of the
pharynx is the passage of
swallowed solids and liquids into
the esophagus. Pharynx also
plays a role on the respiratory
system to get air in your body

Epiglottis
Epiglottis is a flexible flap that is
located at the end of the throat. It
works like a switch that controls where
the oxygen enter in the airway to
the lungs and food to pass into
the rest of the digestive process.

Esophagus
Located in your throat near your trachea (windpipe).
The esophagus receives food from your mouth when
you swallow. By means of a series of muscular
contractions called peristalsis. The peristalsis is
the smooth muscle contraction that moves the food
through the digestive system. The esophagus
delivers food to your stomach. The
During swallowing, mucus mixes with the
food as it passes from the mouth through the
pharynx into the esophagus. The epiglottis is a flap
that is made of elastic cartilage tissue covered with a
mucous membrane, attached to the entrance of the
larynx. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epiglottis

Stomach
The stomach lies in the upper abdominal cavity. It
is continuous with the esophagus tube and the
duodenum at the pyloric sphincter. The walls of
the stomach are made up of muscle. It is elastic
and able to mix what is inside.
Temporary storage allowing time for
digestive enzymes to act. Mechanical breakdown
and production of chyme. The pulpy acidic fluid
that passes from the stomach to the small
intestine, consisting of gastric juices and partly
digested food.

Pancreas
Creates insulin moving it to the
bloodstream
Breaks down carbohydrates, fats and
protein
Moves digestive enzymes into
the duodenum

Liver
Produces bile in the digestive system
Bile is water, bile salt, cholesterol and the
pigment bilirubin

Gall Bladder
Releases bile into the duodenum it helps
absorb and digest fats
Concentrates and stores bile from the liver

Duodenum
Moves neutralize stomach acid
Prepares for absorption in the small
intestine
Gathers semi digested food
from the stomach

Small Intestine
The small intestine is made up of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
All digestion is completed on the small intestine
The internal walls are covered in villi called microvilli, which increase the
surface area available for the absorption of nutrients.
Food is broken down by further enzymes.(secreted in the lumen or brought
from the pancreas and liver)
o Enzymes:
Peptidases: Completes process of breakdown of Proteins.
Intestinal lipase: Completes process of breakdown of Lipids
Sucrase, maltase, lactase: Completes and finishes process
of breakdown of carbohydrate
Absorption the nutrients through the villi.

Large Intestine
Large intestine also called colon or
large bowel.
Water is absorbed here and the
remaining waste material is stored.
The large intestin is about 1.5
meter long and it is about of the
whole length

Rectum
The final section of the large
intestine terminating at the
anus.
The rectum is the last 6-8
inches of the large intestine.
The rectum stores solid waste
until it leaves the body
through the anus

Appendix
The appendix sits at
the junction of the
small intestine and
large intestine.
The appendix act as a
store-house for the
good bacteria.
Removal of the
appendix causes no
observable health
problem.

Anus
The hole in your bottom
through which solid
leave your body.
Its function is to control the
expusion of feces, unwanted
semi-soild matter produced
during digestion.
