GENERAL LEARNER EXPECTATIONS

4.9

Identify sources of light, describe the interaction of light with

different materials, and infer the pathway of a light beam.

SPECIFIC LEARNER EXPECTATIONS

Students will:
3- distinguish objects that emit their own light from those that
require an external source of light in order to be seen
4- demonstrate that light travels outward from a source and
continues unless blocked by an opaque material
7- Distinguish transparent materials from opaque materials by
determining if light passes through them and by examining their
shadows.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Distinguish that the moon does not emit its own light but requires an
external source of light in order to be seen (the sun)
2. Describe how light travels ( when it isnt blocked and when it is)
3. Students will recognize that light cannot travel in a straight line
when it is blocked by an opaque material

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Key Questions:

Products/Performan
ces:

If students understand the difference between an object

emitting its own light from those that require an external
source
Observation of student understanding during experiments
and discussion after experiments
Does the moon produce light?
How can we see the moon if it does not produce light?
Does light travel in a straight line?
What is a way that light will be blocked?
Demonstration of moon experiment

Learning Activity #2

Body
Ask students if they thick that the moon
produces light?
We can see the moon shining in the sky at night
does that mean it is producing its own light?
Choose a student to hold up a ball, which
represents the moon
Darken the room and students if they can
clearly see the moon
Shine a flash light tell students it represents
the sun and direct a beam of light towards
the ball
The ball should now light up
Ask students if they can now see the moon
Explain to students that the moon does not
produce light but it reflects sunlight allowing
us to see it
This applies to every object that we see
unless its a light producing object (like a
lamp) we are only able to see it because it
reflects light
Use another example of something in the
classroom that does not produce light itself
but reflects it
Assess student discussion about the moon
experiment and ask questions about different
objects in the room to see if students understand
this concept
Ask students if they think they know how light
travels?
Does light travel in a straight line?
Tell students we will be doing experiments

today to figure out how light actually travels.

Have some index cards set up with clay on a
board that you can hold up and show
students
Explain that they will be in groups of 2 and
every group will have cards, clay, a worksheet
and a flashlight.
They are to set up an experiment and draw
their observations on their worksheet
Explain that the first part they put all the cards
in a straight line and for the second part of the
experiment they move the last cards a few
cms to the left.

Expectations:
Tell students they will have around 10
minutes
They need to draw what they saw
They need to be ready to explain what
happened
Tell students they should hold the flashlight
very close to the first card to prevent any
light from shining above or beside the cards

Lesson
Sponge Activity

When all groups are finished come back

together as a class and have a discussion
about their findings
Ask the groups their observations and
recordings does light travel in a straight
line?
Explain that light does travel in a straight
line from the source UNLESS its blocked
by an opaque object

Students worksheets will be assessed. The groups

and whole class discussion will be an assessment
if students understand that light travels in
straight line.
Closure
Worksheets In the next lesson, we will be discussing reflection
and refraction. Does anyone know what those
two terms mean?
