Materials

Document camera and a copy of Good News

Procedures
1. The students and the instructor will talk about some good news.
QUESTION: Who here has some good news to share?
PROMPT:
I am going to sing a song about good news. I want everyone to get out of their
seats and stand in a circle. Listen closely to hear how I am singing this.
2. Students will keep a steady beat and listen as the instructor sings/models Good News (top line) with
a guitar accompaniment.
QUESTION: From the song, what is coming? What do I not want to do?
PROMPT:
Lets now learn the song together.
3. Students will echo Good News (top line) in small segments as modeled by the instructor in an effort
to learn the song by rote. The instructor will repeat this process many times, gradually increasing the
length of the phrase, providing enough repetition so that students will be able to sing accurate pitches,
rhythms, and lyrics. The instructor will provide a guitar accompaniment.
PROMPT:

Now lets sing the whole song together.

4. The students and instructor will keep a steady beat and sing Good News (top line) with a guitar
accompaniment. The instructor will be sure to intone the starting pitch to make sure students can start
together and sing accurately.
PROMPT:

I bet you can sing Good News (top line) without me this time. Lets see.

5. The students will keep a steady beat and sing Good News (top line). The instructor will attempt to
intone the starting pitch to make sure students can start together and sing accurately and accompany
with the guitar. The instructor will evaluate students ability to sing accurate pitches, rhythms, and lyrics
as they sing.
PROMPT:

There is a second line to the Good News that we are going to learn.

6. The instructor will model the second line of Good News for the students with the guitar.
QUESTION: What do you want me to do with my good news?
PROMPT:
Lets learn the second line together.
7. Students will echo Good News (second line) in small segments as modeled by the instructor in an
effort to learn the song by rote. The instructor will play the guitar and will repeat this process many

9. The students will sing both lines of Good News with a guitar accompaniment. The instructor will
intone the starting pitches for the two different lines. The instructor will divide the classroom up into 2
halves.
PROMPT:

Lets sing both lines of Good News at the same time.

10. Once the students finish singing both lines of Good News correctly, those who sang the top line
with sing the second line and those who sang the second line will sing the top line.
PROMPT:

Lets swap parts and sing the other line that you did not sing last time.

11. The instructor will teach the students what swing is. The teacher will provide an example on the
board of how a swung beat should feel and look like.
PROMPT:

In this song, swing is the rhythmic style of a triplet in one beat. The first portion
of the beat is slightly longer than the second portion of the beat. When you
eight notes in a swing song, they should be swung.

12. To end the lesson, students will keep a steady beat and sing Good News (both lines) with a guiatar
accompaniment. The instructor will be sure to intone the starting pitch to make sure students can start
together and sing accurately.

Assessment of Goals and Objectives


Assessment of singing skill will be informal and achieved by monitoring students during singing
activities. The instructor will utilize a checklist to indicate which students are singing with accurate
pitch, rhythm, and articulation. While students are singing, the instructor will walk around the student
circle and listen to each of the individuals. If individual students are struggling while singing, the
instructor will go over the troubling passage as many times as needed.

Follow up Lessons
The immediate following lesson will have the students learn the 3rd line of Good News. Future lessons
will focus more on the swing style. Students will learn to sing more swung beats and patterns.
