3. A simply supported beam of span L carries a point load W at mid-span. Find the strain energy
stored by the beam
4. A cantilever beam of uniform section carries a point load at the free end. Find the strain energy
stored by the cantilever and hence calculate the deflection at the free end. (06 Marks) [Jun 2012]
5. A beam of length L is simply supported at its ends. The beam carries a uniformly distributed load
of w per unit run over the whole span. Find the strain energy stored by the beam.

6. A rectangular copper bar 50mm x 75mm in cross-section is subjected to an axial energy input of
200N-m. Determine the minimum length of bar to limit the axial stress in the bar to 80Mpa. The
modulus of elasticity of bar is 1.15 x 105 N/mm2.
7. The bar with circular cross-section as shown in Fid is subjected to a load of 10kN. Determine the
strain energy stored in it. Take E = 2.1 x 105 N/mm2
8. The maximum stress produced by a pull in a bar of length 100mm is l00N/mm2. The area of cross
sections and length are as shown in Fig. Calculate the strain energy stored in the bar if
E= 2x105 N/mm2.
