Overall,Ithinkthispoemcapturedthepurposeofmyprotestandwaswell
receivedbymyaudience.Ithinkforme,thehardestpartwaschoosingthecorrectdiction
andutilizingtherighttone.AlthoughIhavewrittenpoemsinthepast,mypurposewas
nevertopersuadethereaderortoprotest.Inthecreatingprocess,Iwouldconstantly
rereadwhatIhadwrittentoensurethatIwasnotonlystayingontopic,butalsothatmy
poemwasaformofactiveprotest.
Inmypoem,Itriedtoemulateaconcludingrealization,suchasinThomas
HoodsTheButcher.TitledYouandI,thespeakeriscomparinghimselftothereader.
Then,throughoutthepoem,thereadercanseethatthespeakerfeelsabusedandneglected
inmodernsociety.Itisonlyinthelaststanzawhenthereaderdiscoversthatthepoemis
fromtheperspectiveofananimal.
Myfriendsandpeerswhoreadmypoemallgavemegreatfeedback,andafterI
madesomeminorchangestomypoem,IprintedthirtycopiestopostaroundCoppell.I
alsoshareditonFacebookandgotatotaloffiveshares.Mygoalofonehundred
signaturesonmyiPetitionpagewasmet,aswell,andmanypeoplecommentedthatthey
enjoyedreadingmypoem.
Theplacementandintendeddemographicwasfairlyappropriate.Because
Coppellisoftenreferredasabubble,thatismanyresidentsarenotintunewithother
globalissues,Ithoughtthatitwouldbeappropriatetotargetanareathatwasnotfamiliar
withtherisingcontroversyovertheanimalagriculturebusiness;itwasalsothemosttime
convenientchoicegiventheshortamountoftimetoprotest.However,afterconducting

myprotest,IthinkthatifIbroadenedmyaudience,Iwouldhavebeenevenmore
successful.Infuturevegetarianismprotestsutilizingthismodel,Ithinkitwouldmost
effectiveifthepoemwasspreadacrossalargerdemographic.Insteadofonlytargeting
thoseindifferentoragainstvegetarianism,Ithinkoneshouldincludethosewhoarealso
believersofvegetarianism.Thisway,moreindividualscanjointhemovementandcan
protestthemselves.

IwouldhavetosaythatIammostproudofmypieceofprotestartwork.After
monthsofresearchingvegetarianismandwritinganessayaboutit,oneofthefactsthat
resonatedinmymindthemostwashowwesterncultureportrayscertainanimalsagainst
others.ManyAmericanperceptionsaboutmeatarenarrowminded;itisjusttoconsume
certainanimals,suchascowsandpigs,howeverwhenanothercultureeatsmoreunusual
organisms,likehorsesanddogs,itsignifiesasacruelandunethicaldeed.
ThepaintingIcreatedillustratesthisflawedbelief.Thefarmerholdingaknife
kindlyfeedsthedomesticcat,whileatrailofbloodleadstowardthelivestock.Because
inrealtywesternerscareforpets,thecatinthedrawingiscreatedwithmoredetail.
However,intheanimalagricultureindustry,livestockareonlyperceivedasacommodity
andfoodsource.Thisdegradationoftheanimalisthusillustratedbythesimplificationof
theanimalsfeatures.Theseparationofvaluesisalsoemphasizedbythedarkhuedrawn
betweenthedomesticworldandtheuntamedanimals.
ItwasonlyoverthecourseofafewdayswasIabletocomeupwiththisidea.Im
gladthatItooktheallottedtimetocarefullyreviewmyresearchandplanexactlywhatI
wasgoingtodraw.Ithinkitwasbecauseoftheabstractnessoftheworkthatpeople
scannedtheQRcodetoreadmoreaboutmyprotestandthenjoinmypetition.Attheend
ofthesixweeks,Iwasabletoachievemygoalofonehundredsignaturesformypetition.
Infuturevegetarianismprotestartpieces,Iwoulddefinitelyrecommend
disseminatingtheartworktoalargerdemographic.Duetothetimerestrictionsonthis
project,IwasonlyabletodistributethepaintingaroundthecityofCoppell.However,to

gainmorefollowers,Ithinktheartworkshouldbepostedaroundalargerarea.Ialso
thinkthatiftheartworkwasdisplayedonamoreprofessionalplatform,suchasacanvas
orframed,itwouldattractmoreviewers.Forthesakeoftimeandmaterialcosts,I
thoughtthatforthisprotest,digitallydrawingtheworkwouldbemostefficient.

Creativitywise,Ithinkdrawingthepoliticalcartoonwasthemostfuntomake.
EversinceIsawthewaythatMarkParisiwasabletocapturetheessenceofthe
vegetarianismcampaignwithonlysimpledrawingandafewwords,Isawthepolitical
cartoonasanexcellentmethodinchallengingmyselftoproduceawitty,yetinformative
caricature.
Althoughthebrainstormingprocesswasinevitablythehardestpart,Iactually
foundittoberatherenjoyable.FromthemomentIdecidedthatIwasgoingtodrawa
politicalcartoon,Ihadmanydifferentelementsthatcouldbeused.Therealchallenge
wastryingtotieallthesefacetstogethertocreateonecohesivepieceofactiveprotest.
Thefocusonmypoliticalcartoonrevolvesaroundtheinconsistencyinmany
westernviewsonanimaltreatment.Inthecaricature,themanisastonishedbytheabuse
hereadsaboutadog,howeversurroundinghimarecagespackedwithcowslivinginan
unhealthyenvironment.Also,thefarmsnameiscalledOrganicFarms,whichusually
reassuresconsumersthattheircommoditiesaregrowninathrivingenvironment,
howeverinrealitythesewordsarefardepictionsofthetruth.
Afterlearningfrommypreviousformsofprotest,Idecidedtoelicitthehelpof
myparents,whobothworkdowntown,tohelppublicizemycartoon.So,myworkwas
notonlydisplayedinthecityofCoppell,butalsointhedowntownareaaswell.Mymom
worksatahospital,wheredoctorsandnutritionistsareknowledgeableaboutbasicfood
requirements,soshewasabletogetovertwentyfivesignatures.However,thepeopleat
mydadswork,anoilcompany,werenotasenthusiasticaboutmyprotest;theywere

moreindifferentinsigningthepetition.So,Ilearnedthatitisequallyimportantthatthe
protestbeinformativeasitispersuasive.
Infurthervegetarianismprotest,Ithinkitwouldbemosthelpfultoseekthehelp
ofnationalorinternationalorganizations,suchasTheVegetarianResearchGroupand
theNorthAmericanVegetarianSociety,tocirculatetheprotest.Ilearnedthatthehardest
partofaprotestwasfindingameansofdisseminatingamediumsothatasmanypeople
canseeitaspossible.Withtheaidoftheseorganizations,thedemographicisinstantly
greater,providing
