UWRT 1102: Ingram
Final Portfolio Essay

Final Portfolio Essay

Considering all of my final drafts and most important works from the UWRT 1102
course are embedded here on my E-portfolio, I have worked to organize and make this site easily
navigable. Considering the 5 modes of communication, I have worked with the visual,

linguistic, and spatial modes to a great extent. By having all of the necessary links on the
left side of the screen, and placing final drafts and writers choice artifacts in specific places on
each page I have worked with the spatial mode. I have also worked with trying to decrease the
amount of objects on each page so you dont become overwhelmed, or have to continue to scroll
to infinity(or anywhere close to it). Linguistics are used over the whole portfolio. Quoting
from the course website word choice; the delivery of spoken or written text; the organization of
writing or speech into phrases, sentences, paragraphs, etc.; the development and coherence of
individual words and ideas were heavily important in all writing that Ive done over the
semester. With the visual modeas you probably can already see, I have made it easier for
you to find the important things in this essay. In red I have the key concepts. Process work
artifacts will be in blue, feedback artifacts will be in purple, writers notebook artifacts will be in

DeBerry2

green and wild cards will be in orange. So lets begin on the journey of my writing in UWRT
1102!

Annotated Bibliography
Id like to start off with this page because it was the first large project in the course.
Coming into UWRT 1102, I was unaware that we would be working on an extensive research
project, and when I became aware of the project I was little to say: scared. In high school we
would always work on small research projects, and write about our findings to a small extent, but
never over the course of a whole semester.
On my Annotated Bibliography page, I have included items that aided in completion of
my 3-column notes. As a:

Process Work Artifact: I included the 30 Minute Research Activity. I chose to include
this artifact because I found that this activity was a start to the beginning of my semester
long project. It allowed me to set the basis for my research and get a head start on my
annotated bibliography. This piece allowed me to begin to see how rhetorically analyzing
can help me better understand what the purpose of a genre is. When answering the
question about what I already knew about my topic with I believe that the use of drugs
that are not prescribed to one individual is completely unacceptable I was able to get
out of my comfort zone of what I believed and start my research without becoming
biased. I also found that this was the first look at working with the key concept of
rhetorical awareness considering we were asked who the target audience was, the
author, and what the purpose of the genre that was being read was.

DeBerry3

Wild Card: I included a warm up that was done in class that had to deal with rhetorically
analyzing as well. In this warm up we were asked how rhetorical awareness can help with
research and the E-portfolio. Responding to this question I wrote This will allow me to
see ways that I can set up my E-portfolio to help my audience be able to view my
research in a clear and concise way. This piece contributed to my learning in the course
because it helped me better understand how rhetorical analysis is helpful in writing. From
not understanding the purpose of rhetorical analysis in UWRT 1101, I have found that
when I am researching I make sure that the genre that I am looking at is fulfilling the
purpose of my research. This allowed me to weed out the not so informative sources
when looking up information for my project.

Feedback Artifact: I embedded some comments that I received from Kelsey S. and
McKenna M. This was a huge help for me after the first draft of my annotated
bibliography. Over the semester I found that having anothers feedback on my writing is
what has helped my writing grow. McKenna left me a comment that encouraged me to
take a different look at my research when she said Maybe branch out from more than
journals. Could help you with the cheating topic. After I took her advice I realized that I
could find a lot more information about the topic, and get information from specific
individuals that have knowledge about Adderall misuse.

At the bottom of my Annotated Bibliography page you will find my final draft of my
annotated bibliography. Here I have 3 Column notes in which I have sited my source in MLA
format, included an annotation about the source, along with my thoughts and connections about
each source. Here I found myself becoming involved in the key concept of making
connections. In the feedback artifact that I included above, Kelsey S. said I love the layout that

DeBerry4

you did. All the different highlighter colors were very helpful for me to connect all 3 articles
after she saw my first draft of the bibliography. I found that the use of color was quite helpful for
myself when I was continuing to do research to be sure that I was not straying away from what I
needed to find in my research. Moving forward from my first and second drafts, I continued to
do research that was necessary in order to complete my Multi-Genre project with 10 sources of
information. With this research, I was then able to begin working on my Multi-Genre project.

Multi-Genre Project
After I completed some of my research, defined my inquiry question and turned it into
the thesis statement Adderall is not to be considered cheating on college campuses,

but rather unethical in the academic community, it was time for me to begin my MultiGenre Project. Looking at the questions that Ms. Ingram posed at the top of the Multi-Genre
Project direction sheet, I had to determine a few things: how I was going to answer my inquiry
question, what I wanted to say, how I wanted to say it, and what ways I could use to convey my
message. I found that these questions that she posed to the class were going to be a big help in
my project.
On this page of my portfolio I have included a few writers choice artifacts:

Process Work Artifact: Here I chose to include a piece of writing that included my
planning process of how I should go about the project. After I defined my audience I
found that I would be able to reach out to the UNC Charlotte community by writing a

DeBerry5

letter to the dean of students, and writing a newspaper article. This helped me stay on
track with message I wanted to convey in each genre.

Feedback Artifact: Below my planning process, I chose to add in the Speed Dating class
activity that we did. I added this in because I received great feedback from Mackenzie
offering me to make my second genre of the newspaper article to look like the
NINERTimes newspaper since I was reaching out to the UNC Charlotte community.
This idea helped me go from a very vague piece to making it more personal to my
audience, along with allowing my audience to have easy access to this genre.

Below the two writers choice artifacts, I embedded two complete versions of my MultiGenre project. First, the letter to the dean. After meeting with my peer group and Ms. Ingram I
was aware that besides a few commas here and there I did not have to do much to this genre.
With my NINERTimes newspaper article I had to do some work to move forward the
draft to make it final. When I met with Ms. Ingram and my peer group in our conference together
during the week off of class, I found that some of the writing that I did in the newspaper article
was confusing to read. With this, I went back and changed a few sentences in the article to make
it clearer to read. These changes are highlighted in the final. In addition to fixing some of my
sentences and their structure, I worked on the outside of the article where I had put some
pictures. In the first draft of the article, I used pictures that came from a real NINERTimes
article itself. When editing with Ms. Ingram and my group, we found that it would be more
appealing to the audience if there were relative pictures surrounding the article. Here I added in
pictures of the Adderall pill and a chart of some statistics that I found in my research. This
allowed me to draw in my audience and to catch their attention. It helped me become more aware
of pathos,

ethos, and logos, when trying to attract my audience.

DeBerry6

Process Work Artifact: The reflection of my Multi-Genre project was a huge help
because it allowed me be sure that I was including all that was necessary for my
Multi-Genre project. This is my first draft of the reflection for this project. I chose
to include this draft because I felt that there was a lot of editing that needed to be
done to make this a final. It also helped me become more aware of pathos, ethos,
and logos.

Last, but not least, on this page is my final reflection for the Multi-Genre project. Here
you can see that my writing is moved forward with all of the highlighting I did. With the whole
process of the Multi-Genre project, I have found that I was involved in the key concept of the
writing process and revision. In the first draft that I wrote I stated It is unfair in the academic
community, and unethical in many ways, but to change this sentence and describe what I meant
by the phrase unethical in many ways I changed the sentence to It is unfair in the academic
community, and unethical in many ways including that it devalues the college diploma, and gives
wealthy people an advantage. From writing, reading, editing, and producing a final I have
worked with all parts of the writing process and I have found that revision is a very important
aspect of writing to produce a superb piece.

Final Portfolio Essay/Other Artifacts

Although my Final Portfolio Essay is included on my home page, I chose to make
another page on my E-portfolio. On this page I wanted to include other artifacts from the
semester that aided in my success in the course.

DeBerry7

Process Work Artifact- At the top of this page of my portfolio, I included my

version of planning for the e-portfolio. This was very helpful when I was
determining what I wanted to include in my portfolio. When I realized that it was
time to get ready to create my portfolio, I sat and picked out many artifacts that I
wanted to include. In order to stay on track and not become confused, I made this
artifact that includes all of my writers choice artifacts categorized into what type
they are and where they are located on my E-portfolio.

Writers Notebook Artifact- Reading Assignment Notes. Before starting our

research for the semester, we had a chance to meet with the librarian and discover
new ways to approach our research. With this we were also asked to read a
chapter from the text and take notes about important things that we found in the
reading.

Writers Notebook Artifact- Here I decided to include the handout Improving Peer
Review that we received this semester. I chose to include this as an artifact
because at this point my impression on peer review changed. I found myself
working with the key concept of getting out of your comfort zone when taking
a look at this artifact. Last semester I was introduced into this new way of
looking at peer editing and how to approach it and with this worksheet I finally
found a way to describe peer editing. I found that the most important thing I
received from this handout was the quote The goals are NOT to fix, change, find
whats wrong with, or edit another writers draft. Ms. Ingram allowed me to
change the way I thought of peer editing, because in high school this was the
norm for me; to help someone with their writing by fixing everything for them.

Blog
I used the blog as a way to reflect on my writing and things that I have read over the
semester. Throughout the semester we were asked to address many different blog prompts, but I
have found that there is a correlation in the posts. Without knowing it at the time, I have now
found that my blog has helped me a lot this semester. I have found that each blog has led me to
be successful in all of the major projects I completed in this course.
Blog post #1 allowed me to determine a topic for the semester and generate three inquiry
questions about the topic. In post #2 I was able to narrow down my three inquiry questions into
one specific question. My inquiry question was Are the use of drugs such as Adderall and
Ritalin considered to be forms of cheating on college campuses? With post #3, I was able to
create a research plan. Post #4 helped me narrow down and determine what audiences would
have to say about my topic and with this I created a roundtable of people that agreed with the
idea of using Adderall for non-medical reasons while others did not.
I was able to explore different types of genres in blog post #5. Here I took many genres
and categorized them into different groups such as personal life, day-to-day, school life and
social. As students were asked to comment on each others posts, I received a comment from
Mackenzie Belton I really liked how in depth you went in explaining how and why you grouped
certain genres together. I would have never thought of some of the things you included in your
genres as genres. This post forced me to broaden my definition of genre. Great job! I think this
allowed me to see that my critical thinking skills differed from the skills of other students.
After I explored genres, I was able to then break down my three groups of audiences into
one specific one in blog post #6. This was hard because I was unsure if I should define my

DeBerry9

audience as authorized personnel on the UNC Charlotte campus, or to define it as the students.
Ms. Ingram commented on my post This is a dilemma, Olivia! I'm not sure how to help you...I
think either audience would make for an interesting paper. After this, I found that although I
was trying to break down my audience into a really small category, in my case it was better that I
made it broader. At this point in the semester we were also choosing which project to do between
the choices of a traditional paper or the multi-genre project.
With posts 7, 8, and 9, we were finishing up the semester while working on our projects
and beginning to reflect on the work we had done thus far over the semester.

Midterm
Although I did not have to go back and change anything in my midterm I still chose to
put it on its separate page under the blog page of my site. Here I also included a writers choice
artifact:

Wild Card: Reflective Writing sticky note. I chose to include this because I
can remember that in class we had a small discussion on what we believed
reflective writing was. With this I was able to be sure that I did all of these
things in my midterm. Learning what reflective writing was made it easier for
me when I was writing the midterm and it is helping me now when I am
working on this essay.

Id have to say that the most valuable thing that I wrote in my midterm that helped me complete
the rest of the semester was when I wrote about how I was having trouble with the key concept

DeBerry10

of multi-modality of print and digital texts. Using multi-modality will allow me to

communicate with my readers in different ways rather than what is written on a paper. I think
once I get my e-portfolio fixed and put together I will be able to communicate better with my
readers. In the second half of the class I think once I get my e-portfolio put together I will be
able to use this key concept better and gain a better experience with multi-modality. I can say
that in the second half of this semester I have done a great job with becoming involved in this
concept. With the help of the E-portfolio and my multi-genre project I no longer have an issue
with this concept.

Grade Reflection
Based on what I have presented in my E-Portfolio and my Final Portfolio Essay I feel that
I deserve an A (90-100) for my grade. Over the semester I have shown much growth in my
writing and I have done all of my work to the best of my ability. I have engaged in many of the
key concepts and become responsible for my learning. Because of my hard work and dedication
over the semester I feel that I have deserved this grade in this course. I would not feel that I
earned this grade if I didnt put in hard work. As Dr. T.P. Chia once said Hard work does not
necessarily guarantee success, but no success is possible without hard work. I hope you
enjoyed my E-Portfolio!
