SCO: N9: Demonstrate an understanding of addition (limited to 1 and 2-digit numerals) with
answers to 100 and the corresponding subtraction by:
using personal strategies for adding and subtracting with and without the support
of manipulatives
creating and solving problems that involve addition and subtraction

Learning Goals:
I can add numbers up to 18.
I can add and subtract numbers with answers to 100
I can add and subtract by using friendly numbers. (Write on the board).

OPENING: Activating Prior Knowledge (contextualization, motivation, anticipation)
1-1:03 Transition to math groups. Welcome in students coming from other classes.
1:03-1:05 Review signals

1:05-1:15 Warm-up Mini Lesson

Last week we learned two strategies for addition and subtraction. 1) using the hundreds chart
and 2) using using transformation to make the numbers easier to add. Today we will learn how
to add using front-end addition for 2 digit numbers.

Write on white board

Example: 12 + 11 (think 10 + 10 -cover the second digit)
25 + 18 (think 20 + 10)

Give a few other examples. Then ask students for examples. This strategy is not rounding.
Front-end addition just helps us simplify the numbers to help us get an approximate answer.

DEEPENING OF KNOWLEDGE(demonstration, modelling, explanations, directions)

1:15-1:20 Explain Math Centres
Using smart board slides with cards
Subtraction War-with Front end addition (on the carpet and one table)
-have a student repeat instructions
Addition on Your Head -with Front-end addition (at the red table and another Table
-have student repeat instructions
Any questions?
Please do not mix card decks
Number students (1 and 2). Send students by table to the centres

Set online Timer for 7 minutes

1:20-1:27 Math Center 1
1:27-1:30
Freeze! Please do not mix decks of cards. Leave your deck of cards neatly in one pile for the
next group. Direct traffic by allowing quietest students to go first.

Set online Timer for 7 minutes

1:30-1:37
1:37-1:40
Freeze! Have students clean up cards neatly in piles and return to their desks.
CLOSING (connections, summary, reflection)
1:40-1:45 Muddiest Point
-Think-pair-share: what did you find was the most unclear part of the lesson today? Why?

!1:45-1:50 Send students back to the following teachers classes in an orderly fashion.
Mrs. Beaumaster, Ms. Kelly, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Ross, Ms. McConaghy. Mrs. Ross
!Welcome homeroom students back into my class.
-agendas, communication bags, dismissal.

ASSESSMENT
Formative assessment will completed in the following ways:
-student responses to questions during mini lesson, clarification of instructions, participation in
activities, and responses to Muddiest Point at the end of the class

DIFFERENTIATION
I will model and check for understanding throughout the lesson. There are hands-on and kinaesthetic,
visual and oral activities for students. Students may think individually and collaborate in solving the
problems. Interactive games engages students in learning while having fun!
