How can the use of the word classification sort help the students understand

explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
Anticipatory Ask the students if they know what an autobiography is exactly? Also ask the
Set:
students do they know of any books that are autobiographies? After they answer
the question, the teacher would introduce the book called Chicken Sunday to
them and inform them that this is an example of autobiography that we will be
doing a lesson on today.
Instruction: Before the lesson is taught, the teacher will ask the students if they know what
Word Classification sorts are and what they are used for. After hearing all of the
Day One
responses from the students, the teacher will put a poster on the board of a closed
sort while explaining what the class is going to do with it. The teacher will let
them know that word classification sorts are used to sort vocabulary words terms
into different categories, which is a process that involves students in their own
learning. While reading Chicken Sunday, the teacher will explain to the students
that they will be using some of the vocabulary words from the story and
completing the classification sort with them. The teacher would provide the
categories into which the words will be sorted. The teacher should provide a list of
all of the vocabulary words and sort a few of the terms as an example. After
reading the story, the teacher instructs students to break up into five groups, with
each group containing four students each. Once in their groups, the teacher will
issue each group their own poster with the categories and a set of post-its with the
vocabulary terms on them. Once students receive their post-its, they should
collaborate with their group members to see exactly which category the term
should go in. While students are in their groups, the teacher will comb the room
offering assistance if needed and checking for understanding.

they were getting the concept and if they are becoming proficient at classifying or
not.
