Narration: Hello! Today

we will be using the
chip method to
understand how to add,
subtract, and multiply
integers!

Narration: First off, integers

are whole numbers, like 0, 1,
2, 3 and so on, that are
represented positively or
negatively. So this means
integers can also be numbers
-1, -2, -3 and so on.

Write out Positive integers (1, 2,

3, ); zero; and Negative
integers (-1, -2, -3, )

Narration: When we use the

chips to represent values, the
yellow chip will represent positive
values, and the red chip will
represent negative values. One
negative and one positive
together cancel each other out (1
and -1) to make zero, so we will
call this a zero pair.

Show both types of the

chip and indicate yellow
as +1 and red as -1. Also
include +1 + -1 = 0 (zero
pair)

Narration: Lets start with addition.

Here we have the problem (positive) 5
plus (negative) 1. To solve this, well
use our chips. 5 yellow positive chips,
and 1 red negative chip. 1 positive and
one negative together make a zero pair
and cancel out, so we are left with
positive 4.

Narration: Lets try this one. Negative

9 plus negative one. Here well use 9
red negative chips, plus one more red
negative chip. Altogether, there are 10
red negative chips, so the answer is
negative 10.

Narration: Alright now onto subtraction.

Well use the problem -7 minus positive 3,
or a better way to refer to this would be -7
take away 3. In this case, well use 7
negative red chips. Here we run into a
problem though. We cant subtract 3
positive chips because there are none
available to take away.

Narration: In this case, we have to add

zero pairs to bring in positive values.
When we add three pairs, the total sum
will not change because each are
equivalent to zero. Now we can take away
positive three, and so we are left with a
total solution of negative 10.

Narration: Lets try another: +4 minus -2.

Here well start with 4 positive yellow
chips. Since there are no 2 red negative
chips to subtract, we have to add in zero
pairs. Again, the total value doesnt
change because zero pairs only add zero.
Now we can take away two red chips, or
negative 2.

Narration: Now that we have seen

basic examples of addition and
subtraction of integers, we can try
multiplication! If given an equation like
3x2, we typically understand it as three
groups of two.

groups of three visual.

Narration: Now what if both values

are negative, like in -4 x -2 ? We can
look at the first negative as the
opposite of. So now, we read it as
the opposite of four groups of
negative two. Now we can use our
chips.

opposite of 4 times negative
2, we will make four groups
of 2 red negative chips.
However, since we are talking
about the opposite of, we
have to switch what is here for
the opposite. Negative will
become positive. So our
solution will be four groups of
positive 2, or positive 8.
