Essential Lesson Content: Verse and Refrain

A. Before, during, and after my lesson, I asked questions regarding verse and refrain. For a
pre assessment I asked the student if they had ever heard of a verse and chorus. Most
students replied with an answer that showed they thought of chorus only in the musical
ensemble sense. I explained that a chorus can be a group of people that sing together like
a choir, but also another form of music. I then referenced the ABA activity we did.
I explained what a verse and refrain were and then explained it can also be called a verse
and chorus. I then gave the students examples using different songs that included verse
and refrain. I continued to ask questions throughout the lesson and use ongoing
assessment to monitor the progress I was making while teaching. After the lesson I asked
several questions regarding verse and refrain to measure the progress of knowledge
acquisition.
B. At the beginning of the lesson, not many students understood the concept of verse
(chorus)/ refrain or could give me an example. After I taught the lesson and tried verse
and refrain in with popular and classic examples of music, they began to understand. I
would then sing parts of a song and ask the class if I had sang the verse of refrain. The
majority of the class was able to answer and I felt that I had reached the majority of the
class.
C. In the future, I think I would have approached the lesson in a different way. I believe that
I would have tried to use a different method to explain verse and refrain. Reflecting upon
my lesson, I believe that I tried to use too advanced terminology for the first grade class.
In the future, I will try and simplify my terminology to aid the students.
D. I feel that the students that did not understand were disinterested and were tuning me out.

In the future I will try and create a more engaging lesson to interest every student.
