Visual Arts Concept(s): This lesson will teach learners to evaluate


proportion with sketching half of a photo. Make use of line quality
in rendering his or her subject and throughout contour lines and
applying color. Also making use of contrast in value size or texture.

Description of Activities and Setting


Teacher focuses students attention by asking class Who likes to draw and
wants to become an artist? Tell students what makes great drawings work
using terms such as proportion, contrast, and mark quality. Go on to show
what these terms mean by defining the terms and showing examples of the
terms in works of art.
Teacher will tell students that after this lesson they will have a better
understanding of how to create drawings on a successful level. Students will
replicate one half of a photo found in a magazine. Students will concentrate
on proportion, contrast, and mark quality.

3. Teacher Input

First teacher have different artists works on smart board display and get
student to come up toggle through different examples. Teacher will go over
steps of the drawing project:
1. Find a magazine photo which you are comfortable drawing.
2. Fold photo in half and use scissors to cut along crease.
3. Paste one half of the photo on white drawing paper and place other
piece to the side. This piece you will try to replicate through drawing.
4. Using pencil copy the part of the photo you set aside. Doing so beside
pasted part of the photo so drawing syncs up with the photo side.
5. The final step will be to finish your drawing with color pencil.
Teacher will demonstrate by doing sample project to give students a feel for
what theyre doing. Teacher will ask class if they understand the steps of the
project.

Teacher will again ask class if they have any questions about the project and
answer any questions the students may have. Teacher will announce that all
names need to be written on the back of this or her project. Assistants will
pass out white drawing paper, magazine photos, pencils, colored pencils,
paste, and scissors.

Students will work independantly on projects. Teacher will walk around the
room and assist students with any problems the students mat run into.

When projects are done, teacher will collect final drawings. Assistants will
collect all materials used for the project. Teacher will go over what is learned
for the project such as proportion, contrast, and mark quality. Teacher will ask
class what they have learned and what presented the most challenge.

2 mins.

Assessment will be made upon how well students followed instruction, incorporated all
three terms, and craftsmanship of project.

Directed Questions for Discussion: What was the most challenging aspect of this project? What was the most enjoyable
part? Ask students to define the terms Mark Quality, Proportion, and Contrast.
Modifications to Support Varied Learning Needs: Some students with learning needs could use simpler magazines photos
that are not as complex.
Materials/Technology/References: White drawing paper -8x10, scissors, pencils, magazines, colored pencils, paste, and
smart board for examples and terms
