This week in our classroom:


Charlottes Web

Dear Parents/Guardians,
This week our third graders will be
reading Charlottes Web and exploring
related themes. I hope that you are
familiar with the story and can help
guide your child in their reading, but if
you are not consider this an opportunity
to learn something new together! We
have a lot planned for this unit. See
below for a
summary of
our activities.
Math:
Students will
learn about
elapsed time using events from the story
as examples.
Social Studies:
Students will learn about different types
of communities. Comparing farms, like
the one in the story, and more urban
settings as well as the roles of different
people (or animals) in the community.

Grade 3

Students will participate in a weigh your


pig activity, where they will engage in
making predictions about the weight of
different animals and objects and
comparing the object to one and other.
Reading/Writing:
We will be doing some group reading in
class, but students will also be
responsible for reading independently
outside of class.
End of the week special:
After we have completed our reading of
Charlottes Web we will watch the
movie remake of the book to help bring
the story to life for the students.
Keep your child engaged at home:

Visit a farm or petting zoo


Talk to your child about where our
food comes from
Ask them to summarize their
assigned reading to check for
comprehension

1. Purpose:
The purpose of this newsletter was to inform the parents of the literary work that their
student would be reading in class and how it will be integrated into all the different
subject areas. It also informs parents of a special movie day that will be held at the end of
the unit. This letter also encourages parents to stay involved in the unit and gives a few
ideas to help them engage their child. I also provided contact information so that parents
know I am accessible and willing to hear them out about any questions or concerns.
2. Audience:
The audience of this letter is specifically the parents and guardians. The age range of the
parents will vary.
3. Typeface used:
I used Arial size 12 through out with the headings being highlighted through the use of
bold and underline tools. I also utilized word art for the name plate.
4. DTP principles:
Dominant Element- I think the dominate element on the newsletter is the name plate
across the top.
Legibility- the type is easy to read because it is all the same size and font and broken up
by headings.
Alignment- all the information is all left aligned, but the topic of the unit in center
aligned to draw emphasis.
Grouping- I chose to groups by the subject being covered in the unit so parents can see
what is being covered in each area of study.
Balance- the columns of the letter begin and end on the same levels creating symmetry.
Unity- the information provided in the letter all relates to the unit and is presented in two
equal columns.
