All Stories Have Similar Structure

Objectives:

SWBAT realize all stories, including fairy tales, contain the same
structure and elements.
SWBAT become familiar with the fairy tale, The Three Little Pigs.

Standards:

RL.2.5- Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing

how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the
action.

Rationale: I am teaching this lesson because it is important that students

know the elements of stories and realize that all stories have the same basic
structure. This lesson will serve as a review of story structure and elements
and the beginning of the fairy tale unit. It will teach children that fairy tales
are the same as other stories by their structure and elements. It is also
important that students become familiar with classic fairy tales, which is why
we are spending so much time with The Three Little Pigs text. This will be the
first lesson in the Fairy Tale unit, following the introduction to fairy tales
which will take place the day before this lesson.
Source: This lesson came from the West Winsor-Plainsboro 2nd grade
curriculum for reading. To make it my own I paired it with a reading of a fairy
tale and added the ending of having the students act out the fairy tale for
familiarity.
Materials:

List of story elements and structures- chart or written on the board

The Three Little Pigs book
Props for acting out

Procedure:
IntroductionNow that you are over half way through first or second grade, I know that
you have read many books! You have become experienced readers and are
ready to read some fairy tales. In order to read fairy tales, we need to
understand that fairy tales are similar to other stories we have read.
-check for understanding of the word similar
Lesson Development
It is important to remember that all stories have a similar structure. This
includes fairy tales! So lets look at the structure and story elements of
stories and list them together.
-Together we will write down on chart paper or white board story
structure/elements
-Include:

Tuesday, March 3rd

-beginning
-setting
-main character
-faces a problem
-resolved by the end
-lesson learned (most times)
-middle
-ending
Fairy tales have this same structure! Lets look at a fairy tale together and
find the structure and elements in it.
-Read the Three Little Pigs
-Check for understanding throughout the book
-Stop at each element and structural point to highlight it
-When the reading is over, the students will get to act out the story to
become familiar with the book
ConclusionNow we have become very familiar with the structure of stories and
especially familiar with the story of The Three Little Pigs. I want you to keep
both of these in your mind while we go learn more about fairy tales and other
stories because they will help you learn more about your personal books.
Assessment:
I will assess the students based on their work on the carpet and their
participation during the lesson. I will be able to tell if they understand the
concept of story structure throughout the rest of the unit, as well. (At any
point in the unit, if a student seems to not be understanding, we can do a
quick review of the story structure and elements for the whole class since
story structure and elements carry over to all units.)
Differentiation:

The lesson is multimodal- there are parts that are visual (writing on the
board), auditory (reading aloud), and hands on (acting out).
I chose a leveled text of the book that all of the students were able to
read.
