Crude Oil: Unrefined petroleum or liquid petroleum that is eventually refined to produce diesel,
kerosene, and gasoline.
Downstream: Part of the petroleum industry that involves the refining of petroleum crude oil,
processing and purifying of raw natural gas, and the marketing of products derived from crude
oil and natural gas
Gasoline: A liquid derived from petroleum that is used to power internal combustion engines.
Hydrocarbon: A naturally occurring organic compound comprising hydrogen and carbon, most
frequently seen in the forms of natural gas, oil and coal.
Midstream: Part of the petroleum industry that involves the physical movement and
transportation of crude oil by pipeline, rail, oil tanker or truck, the storage, and wholesale
marketing of crude oil products
Petroleum: A nonrenewable resource and fossil fuel derived from dead plants and animals
beneath the Earths surface that is composed of hydrocarbons and other chemical compounds
Shale Oil: An unconventional oil produced from oil shale rock fragments in which different
processes convert the organic matter within the rock to synthetic oil and gas.
Upstream: Part of the petroleum industry that involves searching for underwater crude oil and
natural gas fields, drilling wells and bringing crude oil to the surface
