BATCH MELTING

The batch is then fed into the furnace where it is heated to

temperatures ranging from 15000C 15500C.
At this temperature range, the ingredients melt and various chemical
reactions take place during this step where CO2 and SO3 are evolved. It
takes about 24 hours for the batch to be converted into molten glass.
The addition of Na2CO3 and other materials to the main component
(SiO2) of sand lowers its melting point by about 200 0C. The melting
point of silica is 1700 0C. This is done for practical and economic
reasons.
