Service Learning Lesson Plan

Title: Textures and Prints

Lesson Idea and
Relevance: What are
you going to teach and why
is this lesson of importance
to your students? How is it
relevant to students of this
age and background?

Class/Date: 2/25/2015

Im going to teach how to find texture in your surroundings. We have two

unfinished worked of art from this last lesson that she is having trouble
deciding how to create portions of it (smoke and rock).

Essential Understanding (s): What are the big ideas? What

Essential Question (s): What provocative questions will foster

specific understandings about them are desired?

inquiry, understanding, and transfer of learning?

1. Artists can generate outcomes from

unconventional methods.
2. Artists use many methods to create physical
depth to their work.

1. Why do artists need to create multiple layers to

their work? Do they need the layers?
2. Why do artists use unconventional methods to
obtain a desired outcome?

Outcomes - Students will know...What key knowledge and skills will students acquire as a result of this unit? ...Art history and culture;
expressive features and characteristics of art; art materials, tools, and techniques? What should they eventually be able to do as a result of such
knowledge and skill? ...Compare and contrast art work; analyze sketches?

Students will be able to

Given vegetables and objects found around the house, the student will be able to test objects onto test paper with
paint and graphite.
Using the finished test tiles, the student will be able to identify what each texture does to the medium.
Using the finished test tiles, the student will be able to identify what each texture could be used for by writing ideas
on the back of each test.

Student Reflective Activity: Through what authentic

performance task(s) will students demonstrate the desired
understandings? How will students reflect upon and self-assess their
learning?

Ill start off by showing her one of the textures and then
tell her to explore the other ones on her own. Ill have
her create a grid of some sort (more of an abstract grid
so its not so rigid to make it more fun looking) and
practice/let her explore the textures that I have
provided. Take her outside if its nice and let her find
natural textures to use.

Assessment Instrument (s):

By what criteria will

performances of understanding be judged?

Based on her naming and how she explores. I would

like her to explore on her own with minimal help from
me. Ill see how she attributes each texture and if she
can figure out how to use each texture for both painting
and pencil. If she can independently do these things I
will know she has an understanding.

Pre-assessment:

How will you help the students know where the unit is going and what is expected? Help the teacher know where the
students are coming from (prior knowledge, interests)?

We talked about how to make certain textures in the work and she didnt know how to. She
paints very flat, but has a little prior knowledge with contour lines. I know she doesnt know how
to make texture in her work because of the last class she was asking me. So this way she
knows we are going to apply some of the textures to finish the pieces weve already started.
Motivation:

How will you hook all students and hold their interest?

It will be active and interactive with other objects. It still

applies to her unfinished works and I know she wants to
make them perfect. The only qualm I have is in case
she finds her texture before the exploring is done. If
thats the case, Im going to try and make it so she
continues by asking her to continue to see if theres
something even more closely looking to clouds of smoke
or rock.

Ideation:

How will you equip students, help them experience the key
ideas, and explore the issues to generate ideas for their art work?

I will use relevant materials to use in the texture

process. I will make them easily accessible tools that
she can find in or around her home for her future at
home projects. I can ask her if she has the things I have
brought into the studio in her own home as well as how
she might use them in the future.

Procedures:

How is the lesson organized to maximize initial and sustained engagement as well as effective learning? Provide opportunities
to rethink and revise their understandings and work? Allow students to evaluate their work and its implications? Include literacy and numeracy?

She will explore the textures capable of each object

- Station with objects to test out
- Two materials to test with
Go outside to explore natural textures (weather permitting)
Apply knowledge to finish last weeks projects

Materials and Resources: What is needed to complete the learning plan? List materials and resources in a bulleted format.

Texture-producing material (and some not-so-texture producing material)

Graphite pencil
Paint
Paper
Canvas
In progress works from last week

Preparation and Safety:

What do you need to prepare for this experience? What safety issues need to be addressed? List steps of
preparation and safety in a bulleted format.

Gather texture producing materials

Test them myself in different ways prior
Find multiple uses for each texture for application (roll on, press on, etc.)

Accommodations:

How is the lesson tailored (personalized) to the different needs, interests, and abilities of learners? ...Access (Resources
and/or Process) and Expression (Products and/or Performance)?

I need to be able to do quick change to another texture or another project to use the texture.
Shes very quick and likes to have many projects done instead of one over a long period of time
so I need to keep that in mind and know how to switch it up while keeping on point with textures.
