Student Learning Outcomes Reflection
Throughout this semester, we not only learned new writing techniques that we could use
in our future classes and careers but we also discussed techniques that we had learned in
previous classes and how we could use them to improve our assignments. We did memos
that allowed us to practice SLO A which teaches us to compose our points in various
mediums that are appropriate for the situations that we are in. We then gained the
knowledge of how to create proposals, that allowed us to get more in depth into SLO G,
which is writing used in research as a means of discovery when we were building and
planning how to help the communities around Albuquerque. Before submitting each
assignment we were required to send a cover letter that we would use to reflect on our
writing and to also gain feedback on certain areas of our work. This use of the cover letter
led to us being able to strength our use of SLO F, which is mainly reflecting on what we
have done and learned from not only our assignments, but also our class as a whole.
SLO A
SLO A, to me, is analyzing a piece of writing and dissecting it into all of the parts
that it is made up of. Being able to see what strategies the author used in order to make
their writing more appealing to the audience. Looking at the argument it is using and the
rhetorical devices that are being incorporated in order to strengthen the writing as a
whole. I also think that it is seeing in what way the writing is being presented. Is it being
presented as a brochure or a traditional essay and why? Thinking about all of these

different aspects is helpful because you can then see if the medium they used to get their
point across was the appropriate one.
With this SLO, I feel that our MWA 1, which was looking at advertisements for
colleges and organizations and discussing what rhetorical devices, were used in order to
persuade someone in either attending the college or helping with the organization. I chose
to discuss and advertisement for a law school in London, England and this helped
strengthen my use of SLO A because I had to reflect on the advertisement and look at the
strategies that the authors used to not only catch someones eye, but also to convince
them to attend their law school. Along with that, I also had to analyze the colors and
graphics they used and why they used them, and whether or not the decisions they made
had been successful overall in the ad.
For my audience, I was writing to college students that were in the process of
completing their undergraduate degrees and looking into attending a law school. I needed
to write in a way that would relate to them, but would also show them that picking a law
school is extremely important. My purpose was to persuade them in attending the
Kingston Law School because I felt that this establishment had all of the requirements
that a good law school should have. Qualities like location, a diverse and knowledgeable
staff, and all of the accreditations needed for students to receive the best education. My
tone was meant to be relaxed but informative, so that the students would not be stressed
out with their decisions, but rather be excited and prepared for them.
SLO F
SLO F, to me is, reflecting on my writing and seeing how I have progressed
throughout the semester as a writer. Looking back at our proposal for our MWA 1 that I
previously discussed in my SLO A, and seeing just how much I needed to improve, to

looking at my MWA 3, which was a group effort where we proposed food drive to the
dean of Anderson School of Management, I am able to see that my style of writing has
grown and I am now able to write in a more professional setting. Being that I am
currently double majoring in economics and philosophy (pre law) and my future plans are
to be a corporate lawyer, I have to have the skills in order to succeed in this career field. I
will be required to have the knowledge to be able to research different cases and analyze
contracts and laws on a daily basis. Having this skill that I am continuing to strengthen
from these SLOs, I feel that it will benefit me in the future and will eventually set me a
part from others if I continue to practice it.
SLO G
For this SLO, we are meant to research topics that provoke our thoughts and
beliefs about certain matters. Throughout this process we can discover what we really
believe in, and we can see that we can have multiple perspectives on the same subject. In
one of our assignments we had to look into our ethical views on certain controversial
issues and we had to pick a side that we agreed with. I do feel as though I progressed in
this SLO because I focused myself on a topic that would make me look into my personal
beliefs on something. With this paper, I did research on performance enhancing drugs
(PEDs) and I had to question whether or not I feel that we should continue to PEDs
illegal in Major League Baseball, and throughout my research, I did discover that I do
believe that they should remain illegal. I do believe that having the skill of this SLO for
my future career is extremely important because I will be put into situations where my
morals and beliefs will have to be questioned as I research certain topics for a case.

SLO C
Writing as a process is something we focused heavily on throughout the semester.
From writing our original documents to going through peer reviews with not only our
instructor, but with our fellow classmates, we have to use the feedback and discussions in
order to produce our final essays and assignments. As an example for this SLO, every
assignment we would have to go through this process before we submitted anything. We
had to edit our proposals as a group, with other groups, and our instructor and once that
was completed, then we would have to personally edit the document once more before
our final submission. This will benefit in the future in my upper level classes and in law
school especially because I will have to be able to accept constructive criticism in order
to produce a piece of writing that not only gets the point that I am trying to make across,
but also is something that is grammatically correct which in the end will allow me to
build ethos as the author.
Conclusion
Overall, this semester I gained valuable skills that will not only benefit me in my
future classes here at UNM, but will benefit me in my future career. From every SLO, not
just the ones mentioned in this reflection, I feel that I have grown not only as a student,
but as a writer. In this English 120 class, I have learned how to broaden my horizons with
new ways of researching topics and various methods of planning a paper. I can accept
constructive criticism and use it to build better pieces of writing. Although I have gained
numerous skills I do feel as though I can continue to learn and grow as a writer.
