COMPETENCY REFLECTIONS

Competency 001
The competency domains are accompanied by descriptive statements of what skills
principals should know. There are nine competencies in three domains that I need to be very
knowledgeable and know the skills in order to be a successful administrator. The first one is
competency 001, the principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the
development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared
and supported by the school community (TEA, 2010 pg.13). As part of the projects I
implemented, I learned how to ensure that parents and other members of the community could be
involved into campus culture. As a campus, we developed relationships with parents and with
projects we focused on our campus vision. My goal would be to maintain the campus vision a
priority in order to keep the all stakeholders support.
Competency 002
The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members of the
school community, respond to diverse interests and needs and mobilize resources to promote
student success (TEA, 2010 pg.14). As part of the Math, Science, and Technology night at my
campus, I was able to see the communication with families in educational context. I also
experienced the meaningful opportunities for parents to be engaged in the education of their
children. My goal would be to continue to be able to provide many more activities where the
families may be engaged in the education of their children.
Competency 003
The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness and in an ethical and legal
manner (TEA, 2010 pg. 14). As intern at my campus, I was able to sit in various ARD meetings

that allowed me to see and learn from the decision making, action, and behavior the principal
would portray. I was able to see how the legal laws, policies, and procedures affecting a childs
education was managed within all the members of the ARD committee. In the future, I would
like to be more knowledgeable in all laws and policies so that I may make the best decisions on a
childs education and future.
Domain II: Instructional Leadership
Competency 004
The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of curricula and
strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction,
performance (TEA, 2010 pg. 15). During my internship, I was part of the Design Team, a
committee in which the principal leads into campus curriculum planning. I was able to be in the
discussions of our new pilot program, Project Based Learning. I was able to see how the
principal facilitated principles of curriculum designing and used motivation theory. In the future,
I would like to be more involved in the implementation of curriculum.
Competency 005
The principal knows how to advocate, nurture and sustain an instructional program and
a campus culture that are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth (TEA, 2010
pg.16). As I sat in the design team meetings, I focused on how the principal facilitated the
meetings in order to support the staffs instructional improvements through staff development
and training for the Project Based Learning program. In the future, I would like to see myself
looking for staff professional growth within my campus in order to achieve campus vision and be
successful in students education needs.

Competency 006
The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and development system to
improve the performance of all staff members. Select and implement appropriate models for
supervision and staff development and apply the legal requirements for personnel management
(TEA, 2010 pg.17). As a member of the design team, the staff would work collaboratively with
the principal in order to design professional development for the new program being piloted.
This allowed the staff to plan and develop their own developmental needs and be able to make it
their own. In the future I would like to be more engaged in ongoing professional development for
administrators in order for me to be successful and always be on top of anything new.
Competency 007
The principal knows how to apply organizational, decision-making and problem-solving
skills to ensure an effective learning environment (TEA, 2010 pg.17). At our campus the
principal designated design coaches to each grade level. This allowed her to create management
techniques and use group management skills in roles like the design coach. This was a way of
managing planning meetings and implementing all staffs input and opinions in an organized
manner. A goal for the future would be to always work collaboratively with other campus
personnel in order to be successful towards the campus vision.
Domain III: Administrative Leadership
Competency 008
The principal knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and management in
relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management and

technology use (TEA, 2010 pg.18). During my internship at my campus I was able to sit in our
campus improvement meetings. There I focused on the procedures for budget planning,
management, and allocating financial resources. It is also important to know the legal policies
and laws in order to ensure financial management. The principal engaged all stakeholders at
meeting and updated on all campus goals and budgets. A goal as an administrator would be to
use effective planning of all campus goals in order to be a successful administrator.
Competency 009
The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and management to the
campus physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning (TEA, 2010
pg.18). During my internship, I was able to assist on fire drills and bad weather drills. I was able
to see how the principal prepared and addressed students and staff in case of an emergency. The
principal implemented procedures for response to crisis and followed local laws and policies.
This allowed me to experience the ensuring of safety of students and staff in case of an
emergency crisis. A goal would be to be more informed of how to provide staff training on crisis
prevention and management in case of any emergency my campus would have.
Conclusion
In closing, all the competencies are always implemented by the principal in one way or
another. It does not seem to be because the competencies are always part of the campus vision.
They all lead to student and staff success and a good administrator will perceive that will be
done. My ultimate goal as an administrator would be student and staff success in a successful
campus.
