Essential Question: What challenges cancer survivors go through?


Working Thesis: Survivors, especially children who were sick, are at a greater risk for other
significant health issues later.
Refined Thesis: Survivors especially children who were sick are at greater risk for emotionally
and physically problems.

This article tells about Jenny Charlesworth who was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the
age of 27. After anyone undergoes radiation or chemotherapy they should be the life of the
remission party because it is no small thing to go through the side effects such as unimaginable.
A lot of cancer survivors make themselves feel guilty and unworthiness by comparing
themselves with patients they see as worse than themselves. Jenny convincer herself that cancer
was behind her and there is no more reoccurrence. Jenny had most of her cervix removed so she
was unsure if she could start a family. Jenny wonders all the time if she will struggle to conceive
or have sadness about multiple miscarriages. Jenny wears compression shorts every day for

swelling and every time she puts them on all she thinks is cancer. The emotional aftershocks of
cancer can hit you at any moment- no matter how many years have passed, says Charlesworth.
This article is relevant to the topic because it tells what challenges Jenny had to face after she
beat cervical cancer.

This article talks about how cancer survivorship is a blessing experience by many nowadays.
According to Crist, A study, noted that 1,347 adult survivors significally lower rates of full-time
employment than was the nation norm with some types of cancer survivorship as high as 50%.
Most unemployed survivors also reported higher levels of poor physical functioning. Many
cancer survivors continue their therapy services to get back to their daily activities. By
understanding the functional challenges facing late effects cancer survivors related to work,
meaningful, targeted interdisciplinary services can be implemented. Psychological effects
include fatigue, anxiety, depression, living with uncertainty, drastic lifestyle losses. Sleep
disturbances, and memory changes. This article is relevant because it tells the challenges that
some cancer survivors experience.

This article talks about an experience a doctor had with surviving cancer and the statistics
about it. Dr. Thornton-Benko experienced unbearable pelvic pain and came to realize she had an
ovarian tumor. Dr. Thornton-Benko hopes most of the population would go see their doctor if
they are experiencing any weird pain. Up to 70 percent of cancer survivors have feared their
cancer reoccurrence. A lot of cancer survivors say life does not go back to normal after cancer.
Support programs and post treatment information are very beneficial for cancer survivors.
Cancer survivors want to go back to work but they have issues with fatigue. This article is
relevant because it talks about a doctors perspective on surviving cancer.
