Abstract:Bodyweight,bodyimage,dieting,fatintake,andphysicalactivityplayimportant
rolesinphysicalandmentalhealth,andresearchhasattemptedtounderstandhowsocial
conditionsshapethesefactorstopreventillnessandpromotewellness.Onesocialinstitution
thathasnotbeenthoroughlyexaminedinrelationtothesefactorsisreligion.Surveydata
fromanationalstudyofmidlifedevelopment(MIDUS,n=3032)andfromanupstateNew
Yorkcommunitysample(n=546)wereanalyzedtoexaminereligion'srelationshipswithbody
weight,bodyimage,dieting,fatintake,andphysicalactivity.Psychosocialvariables,suchas
socialsupport,stress,andselfesteemwerealsoexaminedasmediatorsormoderatorsin
theserelationships.Multipleregressionswereconductedseparatelybygender,controllingfor
demographicvariables.Overall,mostrelationshipsbetweenreligionandthesehealthrelated
factorswerenotstatisticallysignificant.However,ConservativeProtestantmenwere
approximatelyfivepoundsheavierthanmenindicatingnoreligiouspreferenceinthenational
sample,withsmokingexplainingasubstantialportionofthisrelationshipbetweenreligionand
bodyweight.Religiousindividuals'lowerlevelsofsmokingasitrelatestobodyweight
suggestedreligion'spossibleroleasasocialcontrolinstitution.Inwomen,religious
commitmentwasassociatedwithanunderestimationofbodyweightinthenationalsample,
andnegativereligiousness(doubtingGod,negativecongregationsupport)wasrelatedto
decreasedbodysatisfactionandincreaseddietinginthecommunitysample.Thesemarked
differencesbetweenpositiveandnegativereligiousnessintheirrelationshipstobody
satisfactionanddietingemphasizedreligion'smultifacetednature.Religiondecreasedthe
magnitudeoftherelationshipbetweenselfesteemandbodysatisfactioninthecommunity
sample,suggestingthatreligionmaypromoteandprovideanalternativetodominantbody
shapenorms.Further,inwomen,greaterreligiouscommitmentwasassociatedwithmore
physicalactivityinthecommunitysample.Therewerealsodenominationaldifferencesinfat
intakeamongwomen,withsomedenominationsreportingsignificantlydifferentfatintakes
thanotherdenominations.Overall,therewerefewrelationshipsbetweenreligion,body
weight,bodyimage,dieting,fatintake,andphysicalactivity.However,thosesignificant
relationshipsbetweenreligionandhealthrelatedfactorssuggestthatreligionplayssomerole
inhealth.Furtherresearchexaminingreligionasaninstitutionprovidingcontrol,worth,and
meaningisneededtoincreaseunderstandingofhowhealthfactorsaredevelopedand
