LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW
Students will list all the different ways they use water in the home. They will
realize where water is used/misused the most and find ways to conserve this
precious resource. Teaching children about conservation of water will assist
in creating a sustainable future. If children can realize that their water habits
even in their own home affect the future, we can ensure that we will have
water for generations to come.
OBJECTIVES

Students will collect data on the water usage in their home and
calculate the approximate water usage in their home.

Students will collaborate and discuss possible ways to conserve water

within their home.

Students will create a one minute video and tell of ways water can be

conserved in the home.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
Students will take a water conservation quiz to assess their knowledge on
water conservation.
Students will create a video showing different ways water can be conserved
in the home.
PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE
Students have learned that we need to conserve water. Students will have
performed a quick water audit of their home to have information to discuss in
todays lesson.

VOCABULARY/KEY WORDS
List of key vocabulary terms.
Water audit- Calculating the amount of water that we use in a given
situation.
Water conservation- The preservation and careful management of water.
Water usage- The consumption of water to satisfy our various needs.
TEACHING PROCEDURES
The teacher will have students implement their data into the water audit

Then the teacher will place students in groups of 3 in order to have students
share the information they gathered from their personal water audit. Next,
students will come up with a group average for each column on their
personal audit charts. The teacher will display the national averages on the
overhead so that students can compare their average with the national
average for water usage in the US.

Once students have realized what their own water usage is, the class will
brainstorm and discuss ways in which to save water in their homes.
Students will take ideas from the class discussion and the information from
their water audits in order to create a one minute video that shows different
ways to conserve water in the home.

WAYS OF THINKING CONNECTION
This lesson plan connects students to futures thinking by having them
evaluate the various ways water is used and conserved in the home. This
makes students think about importance of water and how we need to save it
so there is an adequate supply for the future.
