I think segregation is still relevant today because the Civil Rights Act is
still in effect. Although people still experience discrimination, it isnt as bad
as it used to be. Blacks are able to do anything white people are today. Black
people have finally acquired their earned spot in society by obtaining high
quality jobs, houses, nice cars, and the ability to sit where they want on
transportation as well as the ability to go to school with white people. I think
it is still relevant because white people are beginning to accept black people
for who they are. But, since our generation is still filled with people who grew
up in the time of segregation, discrimination is still present. Black people
have come a long way from segregation, for example, we now have a black
president who was legally inaugurated by voters both white and black. I
dont think people help grudges towards the president because of his race.
People who voted for him liked what he had to offer. For the first time in
history our country is ran by a black man, who, 50 years ago, wasnt allowed
to even ride the bus next to a white person and now look, hes running our
entire country. I can relate the topic of segregation to my sociology class. We
talked about protesting and nonviolent protesting and how it has effected the
world that we live in today. The nonviolent protesting that led to
desegregation is a perfect example of a sociological act. I think a lot of the
information I read I could relate to what they were going through at the time
because of what I learned in sociology. We specifically touched on a topic of
racism and how it still exists in todays society even with the Civil Rights Act
in effect. We also learned about people having rough lives because of issues
they faced and I can relate that to a black person back when segregation
was legal. I could picture myself in their place and understand what they
were going through back then because of what I learned in sociology about
how people treat other people and why they do so. I think racism and
segregation started and continued because people were just joining the
bandwagon. The effect of everyone else is doing it so I should. I dont think
some people who were involved actually hated the black people back in the
early 20th century but since there were specific laws appointed in certain
locations, people had no choice but to obey the law. The reason segregation
has been abolished is because of social movements and peoples power to
make a stand for what they believe in without using violence, and we see a
lot of that in todays society still.
