Primary Resources:
John F. Worley & Co. Directory of the City of El Paso, Texas 1900, Book, 1900;
(http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth213972/ : accessed May 01, 2015), University of
North Texas Libraries, The Portal to Texas History, http://texashistory.unt.edu; crediting
University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso, Texas.
There is not much known about the author of this book since it from the early 1900s.
The source has information on all the businesses and people in El Paso in the year
1900. On certain people or businesses it has a small description of them. The part of
the resource I found useful was the description of the railroads of the time. It will
help me with my travel guide in general with the business descriptions and the
section about the railroads.
"Making a New City." El Paso Herald 30 Nov. 1907: n. pag. Print.
The author wrote this article for the use of th El Paso Herald. The main idea of the
article is to tell residents of El Paso about the growing neighborhood of Sunset
Heights and the progress that contractors are making in leveling out lots. It states
that 1200 lots are being added and then talks about talks about the process. It also
talks about other nice features that are being added to the area. A useful part of the
source is that it helps me gain a different perspective of the project. It seems as if I
am part of that time and you can feel the excitement as if you were awaiting the new
neighborhood. It will help me with the history section of my project.
Official Mid-Winter Carnival Programme. El Paso: Mid-Winter Carnival Coordinators, 1902.
Print.
There is little known about the authors of this source being that it was composed in
January of 1902. The main idea of this programme is the history of El Paso Texas. It
begins by telling us why El Paso is unique, continuing on to talk about the banking
business that was around in 1902. Then it goes on to history of the preceding 20
years and finally starting to go into depth of the strong points of El Paso such as the
economy at the time as well as the railroad at the time. A useful point of this source
was that when it states that El Paso is the hub of the Southwest and that all
railroads in that area lead to El Paso. This source gives insight to the points of views
of El Paso at the time of my topic. This will help me better compose my travel guide
as if I lived in that time.

confirm this and unfortunately the reference book I found this source in did not give
me insight into the author. This report shows me about not only El Paso history in
general but has a specific section dedicated to Sunset Heights. From it I learn how
the area was started and by who. It also gives me insight into other physical
attributes of the area. For example it tells me how the Electric Railway was
implemented. I hope to use this source for overall general research.

Garcia, Mario T. Desert Immigrants: The Mexicans of El Paso, 1880-1920. New Haven: Yale
UP, 1981. Print.
Mr. Mario T Garcia is a Professor of History and Chicano Studies at the University
of California, Santa Barbara. He is also a strong sponsor for Chicano and Latino
studies and programs. He wrote this book to demonstrate that America failed to
incorporate Mexican migration experience. This book is mainly helpful in showing
me how El Paso started being that it takes place around the time Sunset Heights
began to grow.

Rice, Martin R. Sunset Heights: Proposed Historic District (Zoning). Summary Report of
Proposal. El Paso: Office of Historic Preservation, Department of Planning, n.d. Print.
This article was written to propose a zone to be designated historic, the zone being
Sunset Heights. It tells me about the Historical Significance, the architectural
significance, and the Sociological changes. For Example it states that J. Fisher
Satterthwaite first developed it. It also tells me the origin of the name. It later goes
on to tell the reader different architectural styles used in the area and who designed
some part of it. It also tells me high and low points of Sunset Heights. This source
will be useful to me by showing me the historical elements of the area.

Tellez, Alfonso, and Kenneth Hafertepe. Sunset Heights Historic District. Rep. El Paso: Texas
Historical Commission, 1986-1988. Print.
The purpose of this source is to convince the National Park Service that Sunset
Heights is worthy of being a historical sight. It tells me almost everything I need to
know about the area including the architecture and purposes for details, the history,
and significance including in politics, education, and religion as well as many other
things. AN example of its usefulness is the part where it tells me about its
involvement in early education and politics in El Paso. This helps me because not
many other sources offer this information. I hope to use this source for my overall
project.
