Topic: Inverse and Identity Property

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE(S)
After being taught what the identity and inverse properties are, students will be able to find the
identity and inverse of numbers and equations. When given a worksheet with 10 questions students
should be able to answer 8 with perfect accuracy.
STANDARDS AND INDICATORS FROM NEW YORK STATE
A.PS.1. Use a variety of problem solving strategies to understand new mathematical content.
Indicator: This will be seen when students are shown problems using the identity and inverse
properties.
COMMON CORE LEARNING STANDARDS
CCSS.MATH. CONTENT.7.EE.A.1
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions
with rational coefficients.
Indicator: Students will be shown how to use the identity and inverse property in order to properly
solve equations using these properties.
MOTIVATION
Teacher will have students write a list of their character traits in order to show them the identity
property and then have them write the opposite of those traits to show the inverse of property.

ADAPTATIONS

Brian:
Provide lessons notes prior to the lesson.
Provide audio recordings to word problems.
Use technology support (iPad) and provide worksheets ahead of time.
Provide tiered worksheets.
Brittany:
Provide her with a printed copy of the day/lesson agenda.
Recheck understanding and refocus her during independent/group work.
Teacher partner/peer partner for independent work.
Seat close to the teacher.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
Tier 1: Students will complete the worksheet doing only the odd equations
Tier 2: Students will complete the worksheet in total
Tier 3: Students will complete the worksheet in total, after completion they will create their own
problems using either the identity of inverse property.

ASSESSMENT
Students will be given a homework assignment to be checked and gone over the next day in class.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Students will be given a homework sheet with 10 problems on it and will solve for the variables and
write which property was used to solve their equation, students will achieve mastery by getting 8 of
the 10 questions correct.
FOLLOW-UP: ACADEMIC INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

Academic Intervention: Help students to see that the identity and inverse property heavily use the
numbers 1 and 0. This way they are able to see the numbers needed to solve the equation in a
different light, knowing those numbers will be in the answer.
Academic Enrichment: Students will create problems using both the identity and inverse properties.
