1. For Tuesday 4/28 Flexible Learning Day - Complete before
Wednesday 4/29 or Thursday 4/30.
a. Read 10 Architecture Movies and Shows to Stream on Netflix Now.
b. Watch the city planning documentary Urbanized (streamed online,
find a way to watch it)
c. Identify & contribute two original ideas that would make the cities
Chaska/Chanhassen more liveable. Post your comments to the
Discussion Forum located on the Edline Course Homepage.
1. We should have more garden and solar panels on top of
buildings so that we are utilizing the sun energy in our
community, and also all of the water is getting used from
rain and snow so we dont have drain run-off. Less
sewage and better electricity.
2. We should have a system that helps the citizens to treat
our water systems and lakes better. We have so many
lakes in Minnesota and nothing in place to keep the water
clean and healthy for all people to use and animals to live.
Many citizens rely on our lakes for water sources for their
homes which is more of reason to follow through with
helping clean our waters through new tools and
inventions in Chanhassen and Chaska.
World City Photo Essay Assignment
1. Select 2 major world cities from the list of the top 224 cities by population of
urban areas. One city should be inside the United States, the second city must be
from outside the United States.
2. Sign up for your 2 cities on this google document. There should not be any
duplicate pairs from any class period, but if someone has already taken one of the
cities you would like to study, you may still do it.
3. Playing the role of a National Geographic photographer & correspondent, your
task is to create a Photo Essay that compares the two cities. The photos you
choose should show smart city or liveable city infrastructure and institutions
that the cities have constructed. Use the links below and choose 10 criteria that
you believe an ideal or model city should have.
4. The photo essay should be accompanied by your own unique captions showing
the link between the pictures and the criteria. Length of captions should be
minimal, use only what is necessary to explain the link between the city and the
criteria. Please add multimedia effects to present the best your cities have to offer.

1. San Diego: Landscape

The landscape in San Diego leaves the perfect amount of natural beauty and man
made stunning constructions of the cosmopolitan city. It is the best of both worlds
because it is well kept and is eye candy.

The landscape that Milan has to offer contains a great amount of culture and history.
The buildings are not modern but rather keep the charm of what has occurred here

in the past. The detail is impeccable. It has a strong city life without being a
industrialized city.
2. San Diego: Culture

San Diego has a lot of Spanish influence in it, so a lot of the culture is Mexico. Here
depicts the bright colors and flowers during a fiesta to celebrate their roots.

The nightlife in Milan is gorgeous. A lot of their culture is about the food and
enjoying your time. There are several restaurants along the water. Italian culture
has a natural elegance. It brings people together.
3. San Diego: Art

The art in San Diego is very similar to their culture. It is colorful and vibrant and
does not have much structure. This shows the carefree life of its citizens. They are
also famous for their graffiti and street art.

The art of Milan also reflects the structure and stiffness of the people. The art is
very simplistic and has simple designs and colors. Nothing is over the top and crazy.

The people of San Diego have a very laid back lifestyle. They work and contribute to
society but they are also known for being carefree and enjoying their beaches.

The lifestyle in Milan is more business oriented. They love to be dress up in fancy
clothing and go to work at a certain time; once again they love the structure.
5. San Diego: Environment Practices

One low point of San Diego would be that as a part of California they are losing their
water supply. They are running low on clean and usable water. But they are making
leaps and bounds at figuring out new and improved ways to make society more
efficient.

Milan is working on providing a greener life for everyone. They have many areas
that require everyone to have a garden even though they are living in an apartment
building or high-rise. This definitely improves their quality of life.

6. San Diego: Community

The community in San Diego is very together. Everyone always conjugates on the
streets, piers, and beeches and comes together and have a good time.

6. Milan: Community

Community in Milan loves to come to gether to drink and eat and have a good time.
During the day most people do their own thing and follow their daily routine. But if
something is happening at night everyone will come out and live life together.
7. San Diego: School

San Diego schooling is not any different from any other traditional American school.
It is in a large building with many classrooms inside. Just in San Diego it is so much
brighter and have outside areas due to the fabulous weather.

7. Milan: School

In Milan they tend to pack a lot of kids into one room. They dont value the
individual teacher student relationship, so as a result it is more lecture style
learning. They get a good education but it is much more bleak, as you can see from
the walls and even the faces of the kids.
8. San Diego: Jobs

The majority of jobs in San Diego are centered on construction. Yes, there are city
jobs, but the large amounts of people do manual labor jobs.

8. Milan: Jobs

Milan has more corporate and stable blue-collar jobs. But, fashion is a huge field in
Milan. It is the fashion capital of the world along with New York City. It is easy to find
a job that revolves around some aspect of fashion.
9. San Diego: Infrastructure

There is quality infrastructure in San Diego. It is a very busy and cosmopolitan area
which mean then need good streets to allow for the large amounts of traffic to
properly carry the large amount of people. Also, they proceed to do this in a very
modern manner.

Like San Diego, Milan has a very successful and ell done infrastructure. The only
separation between the two is that Milan still has the older feel with the cobble
stone streets.

The malls and shopping in San Diego caters to all tastes of people. There are
expensive and cheap stores available. Also, most of the shopping is out doors and
the malls are outside and not in one large building.

Along with Milan being a fashion capital, they hold up their name by having really
elegant malls with pattern tile floors and very expensive shopping to cater to the
high taste in fashion.
