Bryant, Lisa. "Students Exchange Technology for Nature during Spring Break." UWIRE Text 1
Apr. 2014: n. pag. Academic OneFile. Web. 9 Apr. 2014.
This is a short story about a group of college students and their experience living in the
Appalachian Mountains for a week. It mostly details how enjoyable the group of students found
the trip and about what they learned from having to live without modern conveniences. This
article is mostly focused on the students and what they liked about the trip. It explains living off
the land and learning to build a fire and how they felt living in a cabin with only one guide along
to help them. It also briefly mentions how for that week the students lived without computers or
cell phones and had to rely on each other for entertainment. This article could be useful when
trying to explain how easy it is for people to disconnect. It is an extreme example but it is still
enjoyable for people to leave their phones off from time to time. I could use this article in my
paper if I want to explain all of those feelings. I can also use it as an example of the benefits of
not always being connected to work or a network.
Harrison, Pam. "Overuse of Cell Phones: An Addiction like Any Other?" Medscape. Medscape
Medical News, 30 Nov. 2012. Web. 7 Apr. 2014. <http://www.medscape.com>.
This source is from an article that is on the Medscape website online. It talks about how cell
phone use can be classified as an addiction if done in excess like any other substance because of
the effects it has on our brains. It reveals that cell usage increases dopamine and serotonin in our
brains, which are chemical that make us feel good and it's these feeling that keep people coming
back. This was found in a study and survey done on college students. This study revealed that it
is possible to become addicted to using your cell phone. It study was done to see if there is any
harm that is being done because cell phones are a relatively new innovation and people still are
not entirely sure how they affect people. Overall, this article presents a negative view on cell
phone used in general and not just on the topic of using them in the workplace. If I was to use it
for my paper I would focus on how using your phone too much can lead to addiction. Through
that focus I would try to connect it to why people should not continue to do work on their phones
or other mobile devices at home because people to disconnect from their phones after work. I
would also focus on how not working from home can be healthy for the employee.

Manes, Stephen. "Only a 'virtual' Vacation." InformationWeek 31 Mar. 1997: 120. Academic
OneFile. Web. 17 Apr. 2014.
This is an article written by a Stephen Manes in the year 1997. It's about how with the advent of
technology people are expected to always be connected. To work, friends, or family the
connection doesn't matter as long as you can be reached with a message quickly and that you can
give back an answer just as fast. Even when a person is on vacation they are expected to reply to
a work message right away and people do even when they are away. They leave forwarding
addresses and check messages from hotel rooms because the message may be important.
However, the message is not always important and sometimes its has already been solved or you
can ignore it entirely. People need to find a way to weed through these messages or their needs to
be some type of etiquette that let's someone be excused from work when they are not available.
This article can be useful as an example of of increasing technology has made people more
impatient and less understanding of time off from work. It was written in 1997 though some of
the topics may be out of date. However, many of these issues are still in effect today. This article
can be useful if I want to prove that this is an ongoing problem that people have been trying to
solve for some time. It can be useful even though it was written more than ten years ago.
Quan-haase, Anabel. "Self-regulation in Instant Messaging (IM): Failures, Strategies, and
Negative Consequences." International Journal of E-Collaboration 6.3 (2010): 22.
Academic OneFile. Web. 9 Apr. 2014.
This is a Journal article based upon a study done on work related instant message communication
done at work and in the office. It focuses on IM chat in the workplace in the study instead of cell
phone use. In today's workplace many people see chat messages as a convenience because it let's
you see when someone you want to talk to is online without having to leave your office.
However, the study finds that this can also hurt work ethic. By having instant communication
people feel that they need to answer it and be answered right away because of this productivity in
the workplace can actual decrease. It decreases because the chat messages can cause distractions
at work. The study goes into detail on how this can negatively affect the workplace and it talks
about how it is becoming a problem. This journal will be useful when trying to explain how an
increase of instant communication in the workplace can increase the workload that a person has
to do. I can also tie it into how the use of cellphones and text messages create a fast-paced world
for people to live and work in.
Tessier, Jack. "Student Impressions of Academic Cell Phone Use in the Classroom." Journal of
College Science Teaching 43.1 (2013): 25. Academic OneFile. Web. 9 Apr. 2014.
This journal article is based on a study done on cell phone use and school life. It states that most
schools see cell phones as a distraction and a negative aspect in schools. However, the study was
done to find a positive way to include cell phones in school and classroom work. In the study a
college class was given instruction to use cell phones during class hours and to use them to help

find information for classwork. In the study most of the students were found to enjoy school
more and the amount of work they did increased. It also encouraged more students to stay in
class and to not drop out. The study shows that as time changes the way we use technology in
our lives also changes for the better. This study is the opposite of what my topic would be about
because it shows how the use of cellphones can help people in the class and workplace. I can use
this article in my paper to show a contrasting argument to my topic and how cell phones can be
used positively at work and out of work.
Treitz, Sabrina. "All Work and No Play? Mobile wipes out 8-hour Workday." USA Today. USA
Today, 7 Mar. 2013. Web. 7 Apr. 2014. <http://www.usatoday.com>.
This is an article written for USA Today that focuses on the topic of the use of cell phones and
tablets in and out of the workplace. It begins by sharing that at least two-thirds of full-time
workers either use a mobile device for work and that the practice is becoming commonplace and
even expected to get by in the world today. With this new expectation more and more people
according to the article feel like that they are always on the clock. The article also states that
labor laws at this time are not yet up-to-date on how to incorporate usage of mobile devices. It
focuses on how technology and the workplace are changing the rules and standards of the
workplace today and also gives a few suggestions and examples of people and the things that
they are doing to fix this problem. This source focuses on both the negative and positive aspects
of mobile devices in the workplace. I think it would be a good source to use in my paper because
it includes examples form employees and also talks about the feeling behind why most people
use these devices in the workplace as they do. If I use this in my paper I will most likely focus on
how people are feeling over worked because they are always connected to work.
