CIVIL RIGHTS LESSON PLAN

Civil Rights Movement, Little Rock 9
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE
After watching the video The Little Rock Nine Arkansas 1957 and
participating in a teacher led discussion, the students will be able to
understand how difficult integration was at Central High School and at
high schools across the country.
STANDARDS AND INDICATORS
COMMON CORE STANDARDS FOR LITERACY IN HISTORY/ SOCIAL
STUDIES:
RH.11-12.1. cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of
primary and secondary sources, connecting insights gained from
specific details to an understanding of the text as a whole
RH.11-12.7. Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information
presented in diverse formats and media (e.g. visually, quantitatively,
as well as in words) in order to address a question or solve a problem
RH.11-12.9. Integrate information from diverse sources, both primary
and secondary, into a coherent understanding of an idea or event,
noting discrepancies among sources.
WHST.11-12.4. produce clear and coherent writing in which the
development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose
and audience.
WHST.11-12.7. Conduct short as well as more sustained research
projects to answer a question (including a self generated question) or
solve a problem, narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate;
synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating
understanding of the subject under investigation.
NEW YORK STATE SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS:
Social Studies Standard #1 History of the United States and New York:
use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding
of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in the
history of the United States and New York.

Social Studies Standard #3 Geography: use a variety of intellectual


skills to demonstrate their understanding of the geography of the
interdependent world in which we livelocal, national, and global
including the distribution of people, places, and environments over the
Earths surface.
MOTIVATION
The students will be handed out photographs from the integration of
Central High School. They will not be told any background information
about the scenario, but will be asked to caption the photographs with
what they believe is being said by the characters in the pictures. They
will then watch a short video about the Little Rock Nine and the
integration of Central High School before the teacher begins the
lecture.

ADAPTATIONS
- A student with a visual disability will be able to sit at the front of the
classroom for the film
- A student who is an English Language Learner will be given a
transcript of the film to make it easier to follow along

DIFFERENTIATION OF LEARNING
- Students who respond to audio/visual learning methods will benefit
from the video portion of this lesson, while students who prefer lecture
will also benefit from the direct instruction portion of the lesson.
Students who prefer hands on learning methods will benefit from the
live tweet exercise as well as the photo captioning exercise.
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
-Students will caption photographs two times during this lesson.
-Students will watch a video to compliment the teachers lecture
-Students will create tweets as if they were a member of the little rock
nine
-Students will answer key questions such as: why was it so hard for
people in southern states to accept integration and what were the
pros and cons of integration? (speaking from a southerners point of
view in the 1960s)
ASSESSMENT
-Students will be assessed on their participation in the in class
exercises
- Students will write a 1-2 page paper about what it means to be a
hero, focusing on any ones they have learned about thus far in the
unit. This will be graded.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Students will caption the photographs independently. The live tweet
exercise will also be done independently. Students should also have
completed the first episode of Eyes on the Prize as well.
DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT
- With teacher intervention, students will re-caption the photographs
more accurately after they have learned more about the integration, as
an after reading activity.
