Lesson Plan Title

SUBJECT
Geometry High School Grades 9-12
DATE(S)
Fall 2016
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to use GeoGebra, an interactive geometry, algebra, statistics,
and calculus application.
Students will be able to discover that the slope of parallel lines are equal and that
slope of perpendicular lines are negative reciprocals.
Students will be able to construct a parallel or perpendicular line to a given line
and a point given a x and y coordinate in GeoGebra.
Students will be able to collaborate effectively with group members to share and
discuss ideas and observations.
CALIFORNIA COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS IN MATHEMATICS
Content:
CA-CCSSM G-CO 1. Know precise definitions of angle, circle, perpendicular line,
parallel line, and line segment, based on the undefined notion of point, line,
distance along a line, and distance around a circular arc.
CA-CCSSM G-CO 9. Prove theorems about lines and angles. Theorems include:
vertical angles are congruent; when a transversal crosses parallel lines, alternate
interior angles are congruent and corresponding angles are congruent; points on a
perpendicular bisector of a line segment are exactly those equidistant from the
segments endpoints.
CA-CCSSM G-CO 12. Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools
and methods (compass and straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding,
dynamic geometric software, etc.). Copying a segment; copying an angle; bisecting
a segment; bisecting an angle; constructing perpendicular lines, including the
perpendicular bisector of a line segment; and constructing a line parallel to a given
line through a point not on the line.
CA- CCSSM G-GPE. 5. Prove the slope criteria for parallel and perpendicular lines
and use them to solve geometric problems (e.g., find the equation of a line parallel
or perpendicular to a given line that passes through a given point).
Standards for Mathematical Practice:

CA CCSS-M MP 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

CA CCSS-M MP 4. Model with mathematics
CA CCSS-M MP 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
ELA/ELD STANDARDS:
ELD Standards:
1. Exchanging information and ideas with others through oral collaborative
discussions on a range of social and academic topic.
2. Interacting with others in written English in various communicative forms (print,
communicative technology, and multimedia)
3. 3. Offering and justifying opinions, negotiating with and persuading others in
communicative exchanges
4. Adapting language choices to various contexts (based on task, purpose,
audience, and text type)
LESSON RESOURCES/ TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
-GeoGebra

-Computer

-MS Powerpoint

-Pencil

-Internet
-Worksheet provide on the lesson page
LESSON INTRODUCTION
Students will discover the relationship between parallel lines and perpendicular
lines in the coordinate plan by learning constructing them in GeoGebra and then
looking for repeated patterns.
LESSON ACTIVITIES
Students are to familiarize themselves with GeoGebra by listening and modeling
after the GeoGebra introduction video on the website. The students will go over
the task that is written on the worksheet and on the Powerpoint slide.
LESSON CLOSURE
The students will share their results and experiences with their group members as
they make hypotheses about the slope of parallel and perpendicular lines. They
will turn in their results to their collaborative inquiry on a separate sheet of people
and turn it in at the end of class.

ASSESSMENT (FORMATIVE AND/OR SUMMATIVE)

Formal assessment Collaborative inquiry results will collected and graded based
on depth of understanding and the consistency of the results of their group.
ACCOMODATIONS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS
Any lesson in the DUP can be converted to the language of the students choice.
-Any page on the website can be translated to a language of the students choice.
-Students will be paired so that ELs would get different levels of English proficient
speakers and will have a student with higher English proficient that speaks the
same primary language.
ACCOMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
-Any accommodations provided in students IEP will be implemented.
-Any visual or audio impairment can be accommodated based on individual need.
