Introduction to the Religious Sciences

Spring 2015
Mid-term

Please (1) transcribe and (2) translate the two passages mentioned below. Your
transcription should show that you have compared the posted editions of the text,
so please indicate variants in the form of footnotes or in-notes or endnotes. You
should add your own punctuation and paragraphing in accordance with your
understanding of the passage. So dont feel bound by the paragraphing and
punctuation of the printed editions.

For the translation, make sure that your translation makes sense in English!
(So avoid being too literal.) For technical terms (for example the various categories
of hadith or the names of surahs), you should give the original Arabic in
transliteration alongside a translation. You can either give the original Arabic in
brackets and the translation in the main text, or vice versa. For transliteration, use
the system of the Journal of Islamic Studies. I have posted a description of this
system on the course website. You should be able to type special characters using
the Arial Unicode MS font.

Passage 1:

Passage 2:
From Baha al-Din al-Amilis Wajizah, p. 19 (of Dar al-Hadi edition) until the end of
page 20, i.e. al-Fasl al-awwal: ma yataqawwamu bihi until la annahu la yarwi illa
