Goals
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
Students will understand the sequence of events in the new month calendar. The students will identify days of the week, title, and
important dates/events represented on the Promethean Board, paper, and Ipad.

OBJECTIVES
Students will identify specific dates in the month of May
Students will recognize days of the week

VARIABILITY
The lesson is given in several formats because it is designed to aid all learners. The activity aids visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners.
The movement from seats to the promethean board will be a good break for students who will be sitting in chairs for a long amount of time.
Universal pictures of words will be displayed for Students J, T, and Z. Students will be encouraged to answer questions verbally or point to
the pictures on the chart. The iPads will be used to offer another mean of expression. The activity will allow students to practice with their
fine motor skills and sequencing skills. The formative assessment will allow students to present their awareness of celebreations, seasons,
and weekly routines.

Assessments
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS
Students will recognize days of the week
Signs will be made to represent different days of the week (Mon-Sun). Each visual representation will be taped up in a section of the room.
The teacher will verbally ask the students "on what day of the week is _____" and will go through the dates on the May calendar. The
students will have to interpret the calendar that will be displayed on the promethean board and stand by the appropriate sign that
represents that day of the week.
An alternative assessment will be on the iPads. The students will have days of the week on the Ipad and the student will have to select the
correct day of the week that a holiday or trip is on.

Students will identify specific dates in the month of May

A modified worksheet will be given to each student. The student will have to answer 5 questions based on the May calendar.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS
The students will be given a modified worksheet to answer questions to interpret the calendar. The questions will measure their knowledge
of days of the week and sequence of events/numbers. Students D and V will have to write complete sentences, Students Te & A will have
no pictures and some fill-in-the-blank while practicing writing in complete sentences. Students Z, J, and Ta will have picture
prompts/choices. The assessment will have 5 questions.

Instructional Methods
OPENING
Introduction
The objective for the lesson will be presented in the front of the room. One student will read aloud. The teacher will say "We begin a new
month today. "Does anyone know what month that is?"
Hook
The teacher will introduce "Today is the start of the new month!" "What do we have to change in the classroom?" The teacher will get out
the bin of the labels for the months of the year. The students will work together to agree on which month is after April. The new month will
be posted and the days will be cleared. While this is happening, a Youtube video will be playing for the students to visually see and hear
the days of the week.

DURING
Introduce New Knowledge
The teacher will display a picture on the promethean board of the Month of May calendar. Beginning with the first day of the month, the
teacher will go through and describe the important days, field trips, and birthdays that will be celebrated in May using the reveal tool. This
is so that the students can learn the days in order in which they will happen. As the teacher goes through the calendar, the students will be
given their modified worksheets and crayons. The students will be instructed to underline the name of the month. The students must follow
directions and color the correct days in their calendars. The students must also answer questions on their modified worksheets together.
The answers will be reviewed as a class. The teacher will provide and read color cards with Student Ta.
Guided Practice
The teacher will clear the calendar and call students to the board to drag images representing the dates to the correct day. A paper copy of
the completed calendar with text and pictures will be provided to each student for support. The images will be age appropriate and
authentic. The images will match ones that were used for past calendars (birthday cake, no school, and school bus). The teacher will ask
Ms. Dena to model the days of the week in sign language for student Ta. The teacher will give the Student Ta Ukranian translations of
days of the week.
Independent Practice
The formative assessment will be given with the option of the iPads as support. The students will identify what day of the week the events
occur on. The teacher will verbally ask questions "Does this happen before or after _____?" The students will go around the room and
stand by the correct label. The students will be called on one-by-one to aviod mimicking each other. The labels will be color coordinated by
weekdays and weekends. The Ukranian translations will be written underneath.

CLOSING
Review
The teacher will call on students to go through the summative assessment worksheet answers. The students will call on each other and
check their answers. After the 5 question review, the teacher will verbally ask each student to stand up and name one event in the month
of May.
