FINDING

THE LINEAR EQUATION OF A DATA SET


To plot your data, press STAT on your calculator.


Select the first highlighted choice: 1. Edit...
In L1, enter the data from the first column of the data table, or the x-values.
In L2, enter the data from the second column, or the y-values.
Now, the calculator can find the equation for the line that fits the data.
Press STAT again. Use the right arrow button to move over to CALC.
To find the linear equation for the data, scroll down to 4: LinReg(ax+b)
Be sure that the Xlist: is L1 and the Ylist: is L2.
To store the equation in Y= , scroll down to Store RegEQ:
Press VARS on the calculator (below the arrows).
Use the right arrow button to move over to Y-VARS.
Select 1: Function
Select 1: Y1 to store the linear equation in Y1 on the Y= screen.
Scroll down to Calculate and press ENTER to find the linear equation.
Press GRAPH to view the graph of this line.
