Evolution of Phones
The first cell phone costed $3,995 in 1983,
the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. For years,
Nokia and Motorola ruled the cell phone
industry. But that all changed with the
development of the smartphone. We are
even trying to advance mobile phone still
today. Over the years, mobile phones
screens have also be getting bigger and the
buttons becoming smaller. The latest phone
is the IPhone 5s which there are no buttons
and the screen is mostly the whole front
screen. In 1985 there were 340,213 US
mobile subscribers. Today there are
300,520,098 US subscribers. Also the
prices of the phones have decreased.

The First Cell Phone Made

The First Cell Phone was made by Martin Cooper in April
3, 1973 in manhattan New York. Made by Motorola. The
prototype version that would become the Motorola
DynaTAC 8000x weighed 2.5 pounds, had a single-line,
text-only LED screen. It would take a decade before
Motorola DynaTAC finally reached consumer hands.

Pros & Cons of Cell Phones

Pros:

Keep in touch
Convenient
Gps
Apps-stravaganza
Activism
Convenient
Updates and tweets

Cons:

Addiction
Development of brain tumors
Too dependent on them
Distracting updates and tweet
Human interaction gets lost

Side Effects of Using Cell Phones

What Can Cause This?

Give off radiofrequency energy (radio waves),

which is a form of non-ionizing radiation
tissues near the phone can absorb the
energy
cell phones emit too much radiation to be safe
Today the levels of electromagnetic
exposure is increasing
This radiation can cause a significantly
increased risk for brain tumors
can also cause disturbed brain function,
damage to the genes and other
disturbances

Why Do People Text Instead of

Talk?

The other person wont answer their cell phone.

If we text instead of talk, we can do it over several hours.
People are too shy to actually talk.
Its easier to hide behind texting.
No one can eavesdrop on conversations.
Everyone else does it.
You cant multi-task if youre talking.
Texting eliminates awkward silence on a
phone call.

Its less personal.

Conflict Minerals!!

The Conflict Minerals

What are they?

Minerals are used in cell phones

Imported from the Democratic Republic of Congo
Finance the civil war in Congo

Why is this so controversial?

Civil war has been the bloodiest since WWII

5 million people have died and 300,000 have been raped
Militias and warlords can buy weapons to keep their control of the territory and continue the violence against
civilians

What are the Alternatives?

Southern Californias mine: Mountain Pass

was shut down in 2002
Reopened in 2012
Large amounts of rare earth metals have been found at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean
In the future it could be possible to get the minerals from the moon
rich with rare earth elements
Recycle your old cell phones!
only about 1% of phones get recycled
Each phone contains up to a few grams of the minerals
With over 5 million cell phones not being used anymore, the minerals add up
